Forums - Sony - MGS4 Cutscenes: In-game or not?

All ingame, and don't use jpgs to prove posts about compression artifacts.

Amen, brother. I can't believe nobody else pointed out the irony of using a heavily compressed image format to demonstrate compression artifacts in the source material. And why the red ring? There are compression artifacts visible across the whole image.

I've already replied to that... I realize the screenshot I posted isn't proof of anything, I was merely telling people what to look out for. Also, the screenshot was posted in another thread by sieanr who had seen the artifacts in the game itself (even if the jpg makes them worse).

Someone started a thread discussing whether the cutscenes are in-game or not, I was just pointing out how people can find for themselves. Don't ignore the posts from other folks who have the game and have confirmed slight compression artifacts on scenes without any framerate drop.

Of course, if you want to keep believing that all the cutscenes are real-time, go ahead...

 Correct.

In-Game.

Can't you move the camera around and look at other things during a cutscene? They said that on X-Play.

You can zoom in and move that around, but you can't do anything beyond that in normal cut-scenes

In mission briefings you can control the MG mark II, but it is divided into 2 main screens, + you stats. You can switch them around, but you will never be able to see your movements with mark II on the main screen

Well, if you can zoom and all that stuff during a cutscene it has to be in-game, and not some sort of movie or anything like that.

Yes, but I can't say I have tried it in every cut scene

You can't move the camera around, zoom or do any of that in the cutscenes that have noticeable compression artifacts.

But why I even bother with you people is beyond me. You will all continue to claim everything is in game, despite the fact that it would only take a few minuets to look at the end cutscene of act 3 which is clearly not in real time.

Ok, so far, all the cutscenes are in-game, except for end of act 3 (2 cutscenes) and the battle between Raiden and Vamp on top of Rex (1 cutscene), which is obviously why it was prerendered.
Some say there's another pre-rendered one at the end of act 5 but i still have to get there to confirm :)

Good job. A nice idea for taking advantage of realtime cutscenes by the MGS4 developers.

Gamespot states the realtime cutscenes look as good as any pre-rendered cutscenes from previous games:
