Forums - Sony - 11th June Big Annoucement released ?

but vanguard was not MADE by SOE. it was made by Sigil and BOUGHT by SoE when it - did not do well- current active subscriptions are at ~50 thousand...

eq2 had well over triple that number at release after the first month.

Everquest 2 - NOW - is a quality title- at release, it had alot of the same problems that Vanguard has just less of them.

i played vanguard. it was not hard at all, and is decent to play with, if you have a higher end computer and 5 other friends you play with regularly. solo it sucked hard.

world of warcraft- is currently the most fun mmo out there- is it for everyone? no. (still 8.5 million people pay to play it)but of all the MMO's I have played or beta tested (in excess of 2 dozen) it is the most fun and had the highest level of "polish" of any mmo released so far.

It wasn't from an unknown site. There was a podcast listened to by one of VGChartz members, in which someone said on June 11th an announcement would be made. This news traveled from VGChartz to a number of different websites. The author, URNotE, was surprised it got mentioned in so many different places, even on NeoGAF.

This isn't the first time something is hyped to sound good only to be disappointed.

An editor at 1up.com or Joystick.com (I think) posted that there was going to be huge Wii news (way) before launch. This posting was taken notice of at GaF and on the Penny-Arcade forums and many people thought he was being serious. The "huge news" was not very big at all and it enraged many of the users of these forums who decided to stay up late at night to see what it was; the result was that they complained to the website and (if I remember correctly) the editor was fired.

It isn't unusual for a website to overhype something, inf act I think it is more common to overhype a nothing annoucement than to release an actual huge annoucement .

yup that happened at joystiq. The news wasn't before launch though it qwas last august people were staying up all day as he continued t hype it up and even though other sites broke the NDA he let it linger getting over 1000 comments...Just to find out that IBM had shipped its first batch of CPUs people were mad. They were expecting somehting like HD support or along those lines.

Actually I doubt that there are 8.5 million subscriptions to WoW. Mainly becuase that number has been growing at about 1 million every 3 months steadily for the last year. Also, I was a early WoW adopter. I will say this, Blizzards numbers for the game are NOT subscription. It's total sold.

It is easier for Blizzard to track subscriptions rather than sales since it is a revolving account. First it isn't 8.5 million players but 8.5 million subscriptions there is a difference. A lot of people 2 box and 3 box I woudl figure if you take those out of the equation it would be closer to 6 million. On top of that you have quite a few people that pop in and out every month or take long breaks but not cancel their subscription because people are lazy..If you take those out you would probably have around 3 million.

I mean basically it would average out 7K people per server at a time assuming 8 hours of play.

HappySquirrel, I remember that. It was on Joystiq, like redspear said. And, it was Robert Summa, I believe, who wrote the article and later was "let go" by the Joystiq staff, and he now writes for Destructoid (which happens to be the place that said MGS4 is going to 360).

Edit:
Here's the original announcement by URNotE: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=2780

Later in the post, he starts posting links that show people referencing his post from the thread.

I don't think an MMO... will be the break Sony needs. But, for people who like these games it is big news.
