I watched FF retroprospective, and apparently doing concept art is VERY expensive, which lead me to believe there's no way SE will cancel the game.
anyway, Let's pray FFXIII comes out late this year or early next year, I'm itchy for some JRPG

Concept art is nothing next to the 3-d models....
That's not to say I believe they are going to cancel it (I don't), but there is a saying you should learn:
"Throw good money after bad"
It applies to when someone is so heavily invested in a bad investment that they can't see that they would be better off cutting their investment and calling it a day, and admitting that the investment is lost.
Lets say FFXIII costs 100M (probably at least partially realistic, if two dev groups are working on it, with the scale of graphics and the expectations for the story people have, and the length of development, and numerous other factors.
Let's then say they sell 4M copies (NOTE: I predict it will be about double that; this is a nightmare scenario as a 'What If'). They'll almost certainly make money on 4M sales; however, it will not nearly be enough to be worth the risk of another project of that scale.
In this case, they could easily decide to throw away the (say) $5M-10 they've spend making concept art rather than spend another 40-60M designing and marketing another game.
