Forums - Sony - Last Remnant's delay: Unreal Engine to thank for?

NJ5 said:
Well, had they used this engine before on the PS3? It's pretty natural for them to have the same problems other developers had.

This is the only title being made with UE3.  Everything else is being done on their own internal engine.

Actually, this title is the main reason I believe that the "cross platform" Crystal Tools engine has not been made with the 360 in mind.  TLR is their only 360 title, and it's the only title for which they went with a third party engine.

Though I suppose that discussion is a bit off topic. :P

Emphasis mine:

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCEWW) president Phil Harrison has conceded that the company did not provide developer Epic with sufficient help whilst preparing the Unreal Engine 3 for use with PlayStation 3, later assuring that the situation has been addressed accordingly.

"If we’re honest, we didn’t do enough of a good job supporting them and getting them the tools and technology early enough”, said Harrison, in an interview with US publication Game Informer. "Also, Epic isn’t a huge company. They don’t have unlimited resource. We have parachuted in some of our SWAT team of super engineers to help them. Specifically, to optimise for SPUs, which are the point of difference that the Cell Processor has."

Additionally, Harrison also touched on the benefits it would bring for developers working on both PlayStation 3 exclusive software or multiplatform titles, adding, "The benefits that it yields to end developers, whether they’re writing exclusive titles or multiplatform titles, is that the performance on PS3 goes up exponentially - and it will make for a much better game experience.”

(...)

I guess Phil Harrison is also part of the conspiracy? Maybe Microsoft paid Atari to pay Harrison to say this, before he left his job at Sony.

Geez, Microsoft sure is evil!

That article is a year old.  SE said they didn't get the game working until after UTIII came out.

I have a feeling Epic is withholding dev tools again, which was the reason why SK sued them in the first place.  Epic optimized UE3 for the 360 through the development of Gears of War, but didn't get the advancements made during development out to their licensees until long afterwards.

It seems all the optimizations Epic made for the ps3 while developing UTIII also had a delay in getting to their licensees.  Instead of sending out updated toosets periodically improving and adding new features as they were developed, they waited until their own game was 100% completed, presumably so that their title could get to market first.

Wait now we can take Phil serious ? Before he was the laughing stock of Sony and called a liar?

Yeah that makes sense!

Epic should get their act straight, they cannot expect Sony to do all the hard work for them. They should try to move as much code onto the SPUs as possible like Insomniac and others are doing as well. Afterall it's their middleware solution, else 3rd parties will eventually start to make use of other technology more optimised for the PS3 architecture.

Some Epic dev comments show they are unwilling to really put their efforts to the max and only intend to use the SPUs to perform some heavy lifting like is currently already the case.

If they don't I expect them to sorely regret this for a long time to come, they could have been leaders and instead they would be running to keep up with the competition.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

We can look at it in a simpler way:

The Unreal Engine 3 was ready for the 360 before it was ready for the PS3. Does it surprise you that a game using UE3 as its core piece was ready for the 360 before it was ready for the PS3?

You can't build a house before having the bricks...

Sounds plausible: Epic did Gears first fixing all problems with the Unreal3 engine they encountered and Unreal Tournament second fixing problems on PS3.

@konnichiwa: You're either being clueless or trolling, make your choice. The RROD has nothing to do with 360's architecture, it's a hardware problem. Architecture is more abstract than that.

You work for Microsoft don’t you? Your arguments are the same they give in their seminars

well let me think, Microsoft have been accused of extortion, monopolist practices, copying other companies products, stealing technology, producing bad quality products (RRod and windows me comes to mind), information manipulation, patent infringement, etc…. now lets add bribery

What arguments? It's not like I'm saying anything out of normal...
