Yeah Samus is neat, I can't wait to see her in the Zero Suit during Smash Bros. You don't get much of a feel for her being a female with that big suit on though. I mean, for all you know that suit could have a mechanized wang.

lol but for all you no master chief is female!

Samus has a nice bounty herself though

That suit is so bad ass

 holy shit!!

you re right miss, if ure one at least,

but in the past 90% of the gamers were male

that explain a lot of things

you don't have noted God of war 1 and 2 where u can "play" (have implicit sex in fact !!) with some girls during the game
and at the opposite,
I cannot not mention Heavenly Sword where the girl will kick ass men during the whole game

Time to Work !

I forgot about that second pic...that's one of my favorites...even if the suit probably doesn't work like that.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Wouldn't guys like a hard ass female character, perhaps as an unlockable in Halo or Gears at least. Heck you could even objectify her and make her wear skimpy clothing to placate to the rest of the trend in gaming. Something about games like Halo and Gears seems oddly greek to me...

Why is there such a prevelance of males picking female characters in MMORPGs?

Why aren't games like Xenosaga with female centric casts more popular in RPGS?

Mercenaries had a pretty kick ass chick(dressed like a merc, mind you) to choose and I believe she's coming back in the next one. Also, Nariko from Heavenly Sword is shaping up well, though her character does lean closer to being a Lara Croft or BloodRayne.

What is your opinion on Sexism in Video Games? Non-existant? Subtle? Acceptable? or Innapropriate? Are there really any games that push the boundaries of these definitions or does everything maintain a fairly consistent equilibrium with pop culture. While we can point to games like Blood Rain and Tomb Raider, their lead females are designed for male viewers as eye candy appealing to a kick ass girl fetish of sorts. To a lesser extent we see this in Perfect Dark but games such as that obviously allow us a less demeaning depiction of a woman as a means to a kick ass end. What of all the fighting games, the most prevalent of which being DOA which had its own spin off game where all the women were in skimpy swimsuits bouncing and jiggling on the court for the viewer. What about games though like GTA tha depict women as hookers, sluts and bullet practice? Why aren't there playable female characters in games like Gears of War or Halo? Are women by nature meant to be objectified? Are girls meant to know their place in games like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs? What other games can you think of to either support deny such an idea.

In answer to your string of questions, I'm going to say: existant, not even slightly subtle, and inappropriate. Not inappropriate in the "my child shouldn't be playing this!" sorta way, but in the "this is convincing most people that video games are a puerile preoccupation, and it's holding back the main stream acceptance of the entire market" sorta way.

Another important point: being "kick ass" doesn't automatically make you politically correct. If you're kicking ass while looking like this:

Or this:

Then I don't think we've actually gotten over the "women are sexual objects" hurdle. At all. I've said this before, and I'll say it again -- the most important female character in any video game in history up to this point is Alyx Vance.

Sure there's sexism in video games, but if you look you can pretty much find any "-ism" you want to in video games...

Think about GEARS though can you really picture a female role that doesn't seem like a stereotype in that game, not really...

Halo, does have female soilders, Donna from that 70's show is a good VA for all 10 seconds that she speaks, and Cortana is an A.I. construct based off of a woman...

GTA is meant to portray the world as being rediculosly filed with gang stereotypes, you can't really call it out for being anything but blatantly offensive, as it should be, remember kids "KILL THE HAITIANS!"...

Its hard to design a video game that's female centric with out being called a sexist, Hell, cooking mama, why does it have to be a cooking mama, why can't it be a cooking robot or basic cooking with Emrill, because when we think of cooking we think of our mothers like it or not, and yes i know this is more about objectification of women but it provided a good example...

Video games are mostly a boy's club, that's just how the cards fell, and guys like using their eyes and so there's always gonna be skin, but then again, how much skin is acceptable and how much skin is in the "OH NO!" category, it really up to an individual to decide what right and wrong for them, different strokes for different folks, depending on the detail and type of character model(inuendos are fun)...
