Nintendo announces 350,000 Wii's sold-through first two days in Europe

VGChartz numbers say in Wii's first *three* days in Europe, Wii sold 327,000 - a 7% difference.

So you see VGChartz undertracks official Nintendo numbers by about the same as they do official Sony numbers! So why aren't you also rampaging around looking to get Nintendo's numbers bumped up 7%? Heck let's just increase everyone 7% across the board!

I'm not going to go look up MS launch numbers since it's so long ago but I'm sure it's the same story.

Please read this thread for a more detailed look at how VGChartz compares to numbers from other tracking services in the PAL regions.

So the wii should be increased accordingly then.

This goes out to everybody. I posted an article on this forum because i thought people would be interested to hear the sales numbers. Ive seen vgcharts regulary adjust their numbers on the front page by margins as small as 10k, so when the official numbers came out i thought they would be adjusted accordingly. People going 'nuh uh' to me screamed fanboys who didnt want the ps3 to be doing any better and my personal opinion is the numbers should match what the companies say. Other peoples opinions are different to mine on the matter and that's all their is to it.

VGChartz numbers are adjusted when they are not hitting their targets. In this case, their target is intentionally 5-7% lower than what the companies come out and say - across the board - because they know that the companies tend to take the high-end of the estimates while VGChartz tries to take the middle road. So in this case, there is no adjustment because they've actually hit their target pretty dead on.

Now I think this issue is pretty much settled.

You're right nobody knows the exact numbers. Fact is only sony has sonys numbers. Whatever paided third party sales trackers this site has access to, sony will have access to them as well. So the fact is sony knows more about how many ps3's were sold then this site does. Sony didnt come out and just say they have sold a million, they have said they have sold OVER a million. So just calling it at a million is less then what sony have said in the first place.

So you're going to put all your stock into a company that has a vested interest in reporting high numbers?

As someone who has worked in advertising and PR for the past 7 years, I wouldn't trust those numbers with a ten foot pole. I doubt they're far off the mark (VGC isn't far from their numbers), but I also doubt they're picking a conservative estimate and publicising that.

Im trusting the people who have access to more information than this website and they say over one million so if you want to talk about an over top estimate taking the over 1 million figure and just calling it just 1 million is still less then what sony says.

yes, Ps3 has actually sold 10 billions units in Europe...here in Italy everyone has got at least 5 Ps3 (my gradnma for instance has got 12 Ps3: 4 for each TV set...sorry...13...she actually uses one to to keep her feet warm when she's playing motorstorm) ...and Sony is understimating cause it's the only company in the world that values truth more than profit

seriously: it's just a 5 to 7% of difference from a company ESTIMATION. As already pointed out by other members Sony figures must come out from the same sources that VGC uses (or at least similar ones so not necessarily better or worse: no soundscan-like system here in Europe!)...and excluding the case of soundscan-like systems that track every single CD sold all other sources usually come out with RANGES (something like "5000-6000 units have been sold this week in France according to our data").

Now if you always take the highest figure from every european country for each given week (that's just what supposedly MS, Sony,N and every other company do when making statements regarding sales of their own products) you can easily come out with a difference of 50k-70k units in 10 weeks...honestly i wouldn't care that much for such a little difference and the only fact that can't be denied is that PS3, right now, is selling well under Sony's pre-launch expectations: do you think that 950k colud be seen as a failure? well i don't think that 1020-30k could be considered a success either (when you consider that about half of this figure comes from the first week's sales and another 20% came from the 2nd week...at least if we give credit to Sony's triumphants press releases in the days that follwed the european launch).

O.T.

as a side note: i'm a PC gamer...and the last console that i have bought was the good ol' SNES..but this thing of the "nextgen war", i have to admit, is quite entertaining! oh, this is my first post in the forum...so hello to everybody!

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

blowfish, please don't stress yourself. I completly understand where you're coming from and probably your absolute frustration. This site's forum community has got to be one of the worst around with some really weird group of people. The chart info is great and is what I usually use this site for but participating in forum discussions can be unneccessarily frustrating and can get disruptive rampantly. Just use other gaming forums for most of your discussions and you'll feel a hell of a lot better.

The sales on the site are as of last week (ending 3rd June) so are of the same timeframe as these if not slightly less

The 50k discrepancy comes from Sony highballing all their figures. They had 600k launch we had more like 550k.

So the bottom line is that the numbers on the site are just fine and all those saying they have been tracking too low are wrong.

The PS3 figures are being measured by the same metrics that the xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii figures are being measured by.  Calm down, step back, and realize that the PS3 numbers relative to the 360 and Wii numbers on this site are accurate, or as accurate as can reasonably be.

The companies can't be trusted.  Sure, we can see what they say but the idea behind vgchartz is that it is another check: if Microsoft claims they sold 10.4 million in December 2004 we can either trust them or we can also look at VGchartz.  It's nice to have someone keeping the companies in check.

Excuse me, but have you only read the topic's title ??

It by itself puts the Original Poster to shame.

Im sorry but wtf? People like you are the ones that are in shame. I have done nothing wrong, i have posted an official press release and vgcharts numbers are lower then the press release, so why shouldnt the numbers be changed.

Who are you to give orders to ioi !? One "maybe" or a "why not" in your title should have shown respect to the creator of this site and his work.

That is all i had to say in this topic.

Any company's public relations department has a job of putting a positive spin on everything. It's the same thing as a saleman who gets a commission for getting you to buy an Xbox at EB or something. They're trying to SELL you shit, not to tell the 100% TRUTH.

Taking Sony's (or Nintendo, or Microsoft's) numbers as GOSPEL is like buying a game based on the publisher's great-sounding press release in lieu of a magazine review.

Besides, with Sony's parade of PR blunders, I don't think their dept. has the best track record anyway.

@Blowfish, I understand where your coming from but the companies basically lie through their teeth.

A good example of this (as I used on the other thread) is when MS announced that they had 'sold' 10M xbox360's, which turned out to be sold to retailers rather than consumers. Nexgenwars believed them which is why their 360 sales are over a million higher than VGchartz.

How did a simple statistical discrepancy last so long if I'm not answering my own question in this post. Its pretty simple how something like this happens just need a little understanding of statistics to get it basically whoever you want to choose Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo does not physically go to every single retailer they have sold to and examine their records to see how many systems they have sold through they call and take a sample of retailers. From this sample population you create an extrapulation of likely numbers of sales think of it as the bell curve with the point closes to the center representing the most likely value. As many have said you take the lower end of the curve sub .95k sales if you are a tracking service to protect yourself from over estimating and you take the high end if you are a company because it makes you look better when in all actuallity the most likely point is probably right in the middle of the two that is why when you see these polls there is a + 5% in all these numbers. So anyways just let it go blowfish I mean if you really want to make some conspiracy here I think its much more logical to think that the companies do non random sampling to inflate their numbers as opposed to third parties to deflate them.

If you want particularly accurate numbers, the only ones the manufacturer can give you are the number of units they produced, the number they shipped, and the number they sold to stores. For example, Sony recently noted that they produced 5.5 million and sold 3.6 million of those to retailers.

That suggests VGChartz numbers are quite accurate -- as anyone can see there are many PS3s sitting in stores right now.
