Microsoft - The Wii reaches ‘a little bit more’ of casual audience than 360

“Nintendo and Microsoft have different target audiences and pretty different aspirations. If you think about Nintendo, their audience will tend to be quite a bit younger than our audiences. They will skew on more games that are more casual. They buy fewer games per console. Their ecosystem around the console is very Nintendo-focused. If you look at the top 20 games on the Wii, almost all of them are from Nintendo. It’s a very different approach. They’re not trying to be a digital entertainment platform. They’re not trying to do movie video downloads. They don’t have the same type of Xbox Live service we have. Because (the Nintendo Wii) is at a lower price point and reaches a little bit more casual audience, they will do better on units proportionally than we will over time. (But) business is in very good shape. We said 12 months ago that Xbox would make money this fiscal year and we are on a path to do that. That’s a big milestone for us.” - Robbie Bach, President, Microsoft’s entertainment and devices

All in all, some nice comments from Mr. Bach. I am not too sure about the younger comments. I know there will be a younger audience on the Wii, but we also get a much older audience, as well. I understand the point he is making, though. As for the casual comment, I think Nintendo has distanced themselves from Microsoft quite a bit.

actually in the uk the wii is not at a lower price anymore and the attach rate per console becomes more and more irrelevent the larger the Wii's install base so thats a pretty weak argument.  MS would love to knock out the quality or software sales numbers that Nintendo do - it seems every time they release a game it sits in ww top 10 for months.

I think as people get older they experience a second childhood, they never leave childhood since they play games or they are actually children. What they're saying is that Wii owners are all child*like*

He is somewhat right about the younger audience but he neglected to mention that the audience was younger 20 years ago.

Any way he is talking shit and really doesn´t know what he says as he is high on the fumes of profitability for the first time.
