Yes, it is region free. I recommend you Ouendan or Jump Superstars if you want to import some nice games.

DS is region free. I got a Harvest Moon game from Japan last febuary. It is worth the trade.

Oh, and one advantage: DS has not load times (cartridge instead of disc)... so, you can play RPG's in a very fluid way between battles.
