God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

I'll say it again.  God is a concept by which we measure our pain.  Yeah.  Pain.  Yeah.

 I don't believe in magic...

I know there is a God. I just think all religions have twisted his word, one way or another, for personal gain.

I am Daemon. I am the Word.

Ha, "More than meets the eye". Anyways i think schopenhauer is right to a certain extent (i didn't fully go into your guys arguement). The bible is meant for a higher spiritual meaning. This meaning is called "The Word of God", and i 100% sure that the Word of God does not, cannot, and will not contradict itself. Without the Word of God the Bible is just a book.

I know I brought this subject up and its a weeks old...but I agree...there is a God but everyone needs to realize that if there isnt a God....how should I believe George Washington was the 1st President of the U.S. how am i suppose to know that and all i see is art of him where is the real pic huh....its hard to trust in history if you cant believe in the Bible why believe in history....

Well I would agree with you except for one tiny bit.

There are not countries who believe in different manifestations of George Washington, and intend to kill if anyone disagrees with their idea of George. This obviously that a belief in "god" matters more than a belief in George Washington. Hardly a very good analogy, and as a result I consider your argument proclaiming your superstition, failed.

I would assure you, if there were "Georgians" who claim that because of the writings of Washington, that all gays cannot marry - I would be there to argue against it.

- European Middle Age came to mind ...

- Arab's conquest, too...

- Human sacrifices of ancient agricultural society...

I could be wrong but I see those as possibly being mentioned. May you give a brief description about the book?

Offtopic, but you need to reread you Middle Eastern history regarding the expansion of the Islamic Empire. It was not religious based. In fact the Christians and Jews living under Islamic rule had more religious freedoms than under Christian Roman Rule or Persian.

This expansion was actually for power and money, not religion. Islam was not pushed on the populace as was the case when Roman leadership transitioned to Christianity.

I think it comes down to this, i believe in god

the reason for this is is because whats the harm in doing so? if i dont believe in god do i feel better about myself, think im above other people? No
I believe in god, its a way of giving me hope, and bettering myself, and it also gives me strength. If there is no harm in believing i dont see the problem. IF there is one, good i believed in him and lived by his laws.

If its not hurting you whats the problem, this disccusion could go on forever

Let me change your quote so that I can try and understand your argument, let me know if I have changed it too much, or have twisted your beliefs.

"I think it comes down to this, I believe in one of the gods people commonly believe in.

The reason for this is because I believe where is the harm in believing in my one god? If I don't believe in my god do I feel better about myself? Do I think I am above other people? No.

I believe in my one god, because it is way of giving me hope and bettering myself, it also gives me strength. If there is no harm in believing I don't see the problem. If the one god I happen to believe in exists, I believed in him and lived by his laws.

If it's not hurting you what's the problem, this discussion is non-terminating."

Well, I'll skip past some of the obvious, discussion ending arguments, and jump right to this one,

"The fact that a religious man is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."

Then I'll say:

If your belief in religion is truly not harming me, then I apologize, but I think it's fair to say religion does more harm than good, and thus it is fair to say that at least 50% of religion is doing more bad than good. That means I could concievably flip a coin to decide if a particular religion is good or bad. I'm afraid the odds just spoil me, and if your beliefs truly do no harm - I apologize again.

DUNCAN!!! Hey, you never replied to my last post back on what page 4 or 5 or so...if you have time check it out, if not, meh. no big deal.

I'm pretty sure I did, it's on the page that you posted on.

Let me ask you something, if your god commanded you to kill the population of Detroit, would you do it?

@DuncanMcNeil

That depends, will God give me some really cool plasma laser weaponry and a shield that encompasses my entire body? Plus I need written verification of my 72 *female* virgins.

EDIT: Actaully you didnt respond to me. If you go to page three, I posted a generalization of my beliefs, you responded to that, I responded to each of your comments and then nothing. That is all on page four.
