Happens all the time, I worked at bestbuy and you hear this in person almost daily.

lady: "Hi, Apple store has Ipod (4GB) for 50 bucks, I want to price match"

me: *checks online"... "I'm sorry, they are selling it for $149"

lady: "I was there yesterday and they are selling for 50 bucks

The mother of my friend always does that she is always trying to reduce the price.

At the same time I have been required to talk to several managers because no one believed certain websites were legitimate when their price was lower than the cost to places like BestBuy and Futureshop

If it were me I would have picked up my phone on speaker and called the local toys r us just to see her face when they said the price.

 well, it has to be an actual store. Heck, I can create a website today selling Ipods for 2 bucks, doesn't mean I can walk into bestbuy demanding a price match.

Clearly she had no idea what she was talking about. I wonder what made her interested in the DS anyway? Clearly not any specific games if she wanted "5 dollars worth"

Actually, Futureshop and Bestbuy do price match websites (in Canada anyways) but they include shipping and handling with the price (to prevent companies from charging $200 Shipping and Handling).

Pfft, that lady needs to learn how to do it. First, you don't demand the low price right off the bat. You have to purchase it first (from a place that allows return).

Once you have the system, you fake a receipt from another store at a lower price, and then go back to best buy or wherever with your receipt, and the fake receipt, and return the product. Don't mention anything when returning, just return it. When they ask why, say a friend of yours got it cheaper elsewhere and so you're going to go buy it there. Since the product is open and they will be forced to take a loss if they take it back (which if you choose well or make a fuss they will), they will say that they can price-match it if you have your friend's receipt. (either that or they'll take it back, which will result in a net nothing gained or lost to you)

If they offer to price-match, you either say you brought it with you or leave and come back in a half hour. Either way, when you show them the receipt you need to make it believable. $20 is too little for a DS. $20 off is more realistic (or, if you are at a gamestop, less than the price difference between a new and used model). So you show them the mocked-up receipt (or, even better, a photocopy of it). At this point, they are forced to choose between eating the cost of the whole DS, or just the discount. They will pretty much always choose the discount to you.

(note: I don't condone doing this. I used to social engineer quite often, and this general plan I found to be fairly successful, but haven't done it in years so it is possible stores have learned against this. Not to mention it is basically stealing, only slightly more legitimate. Please don't do this to small, local stores especially, as they have a hard enough time competing with the chains without adding attrition do to grafting. I would be marginally okay with it if you try this at a Best Buy, and I would be super happy if you do it to a gamestop, but please try to social engineer responsibly.)
