The thing about bluray is that its great technology. Its awesome to have a 50 GB storage capacity on a optical media... what isn't aweosme is that they are trying to push this technology on the normal/average consumer. The technology will come to light when its affordable enough and ready for the mainstream.

I suspect it will have far move practical use in the computer world than in the Movie world as Indiana Jones:the crystal skull is an average movie no matter what resolution you watch it at...

But Sony should have waited for the mainstream push until they could give us blank disks for 5 bucks a pop and burners for 100 bucks.

Err... in actual fact its the norm for technology to release before the mainstream is ready.  Cassette tapes - expensive (at first), CDs - expensive (at first) and recording your own, sorry you'll have to wait for that, VHS - expensive (at first), DVD - expensive (at first) and recording your own, sorry you'll have to wait for that.

BR is no different.  Eventually it will get cheaper, you'll get BR recorders, etc.  But no way would the electronics giants wait until they got it all affordable - that's simply not how the market works nor how its ever worked.

New tech = expensive for first 2 years and early adopters only, then mainstream adoption (if its succeeds and doesn't disappear).  The point being made in the OP is that BR, given this cost and looking back to DVD adoption, seems to be growing at a more than acceptable pace vs previous formats such as DVD adoption over VHS format.

I know a lot of gamers didn't want the PS3 with BR because they didn't want that cost but at the end of the day businesses like Sony make their choies and you vote with your money.  If you don't want it at all you don't buy, if you want it at a lower price then you have to wait the 2 years or so that normally takes, if you want it now you buy it now.

When I think on how much the first Betamax and VHS players cost vs their specs... never mind the cost of the first CD and DVD burners...

You know what would have happened to DVD if they listened to his opinion? Think of DVD first coming out in 2001 as opposed to 1997.

We would be in a completely different situation right now, considering PS2 games would all run on CD's.

Why don't people stop whining and just... I don't know... wait till prices drop? As millions did with DVD players, CD players, VHS players, etc...

You guys are silly. I never said that bluray should not have been released when it was made...however, bundling it with the succesor to the best selling console of all time at such an early stage of blurays life cycle was dumb. We all see how thats worked out for Sony...

You can talk market penetration...stats...DVD vs bluray sales...whatever else justifies the success of bluray.  The bottom line is, Bluray has offered nothing to gaming thus far...and we gamers are picking up the tab for the technology to become more mainstream. Unless you own sony stock and are happy about them getting this technology to 12 million people who bought a ps3 at atleast 100 dollars more per unit...or you like watching bluray movies and don't mind paying the price for your HD content....you have nothing really to be happy about for getting bluray as gamers.

PS3 is $50 more than 360 and 360 takes that $50 back for online. Stop with the complaints about pricing on consoles. Want to complain about gaming prices, ask MS why the 360 has had only a $50 drop in over 2 years and why their DVD games cost the same as my BD games.

The BD owners should be happy, it isn't us who are overpaying.

What else is funny, this thread is about it's market penetration too, not just gaming.

How many people I have known just like you who originally thought DVD didn't do anything for PS2 when it first came out considering most games were still released on CD's (Blue backed PS2 media). That changed quick. You honestly don't think it will happen again? Do You think DVD is the end-all for optical media?

Shit... I for one certainly hope not.

I also do not own any Sony stock, I am just happy because I have a  PS3 with a BD player and it cost me the same it cost me to get my 360 with a DVD drive.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

One advantage BR vs DVD has over DVD vs VHS is backwards compatibility. Millions of people ended up "upgrading" their old movie collection. I doubt anyone who still has an old VHS collection still watches any of those movies instead of the digital versions. With BR players people don't need to feel compelled to re-buy old movies, as long as it's not a favorite or the newer HD version comes packed with some very desirable features. Moving into BR will eventually come as a regular player upgrade (when the prices get friendly enough), just like right now if someone plans to change their old TV set they are most likely thinking of buying one of those nice slim flat LCD/plasma screens.

DVD has often been hailed as the fastest-adopted consumer technology ever, significantly outperforming the adoption of VHS video. Blu-Ray adoption is happening even faster due to the PS3.

The PS3 plays a crucial role in making the Blu-Ray movie format a success. And IMO Blu-Ray makes the game console by far the best specced gaming console out today. It's a most excellent gaming format as well (sustained predictable streaming speeds, scratch resistant discs and most importantly far more available storage space which will lead to far fewer storage related sacrifices).

More and better HD content (games and movies) will considerably help HDTV sales for the long run. IMO the inclusion of Blu-Ray technology was absolutely the right decision for Sony looking from the grand and long term perspective.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

1. You are speaking for America there. Xbox is a lot cheaper than ps3 in Europe and Japan. Xbox sells well in America as is so they really didn't have to cut their profit margins on a console ike Sony...

2. Dvd games cost the same as bluray games (meaning 360 vs ps3) because in a lot of instances, the dvd ones are better than the same versions of the bluray ones. Also, in Europe, ps3 games are more pricey than 360 ones...

3. Agian as a video junkie, you are probably very happy to get a ps3 for 399 as the cheapest player by insignia is that much. As a gamer however you are getting a toaster tossed in with your microwaive. Great deal, totally unecessary...

4. I've been playing a few online games on ps3 for a couple of weeks now. (mortal kombat 2, Warhawk and GT5P)  If I send them a 50 dollar check, will they make it better?

Enough Fishy bashing. Either provide a link of what he said or let it die. Personally, I doubt he ever said anything that indisputable about VGC's numbers.

Let's get this back on topic and cool it with the moderator bashing.
