First FIFA 09 details: “250 key improvements” promised

The 2008 edition of Electronic ArtsFIFA Soccer and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer saw the gap in quality between both lessen considerably, with many claiming that EA had finally knocked Konami from its perch at the top of the football simulation tree for the first time in a long time. Proving that it isn’t content with resting on its laurels, EA has announced that FIFA 09 will include “250 key improvements” over last year’s effort.

FIFA 09, we’re promised, is set to include (according to Gamesmaster magazine):

“…improved responsiveness that allows for quicker release of the ball, greater urgency in the off-the-ball running, a new jostle system that takes into account the strength of the players when going shoulder to shoulder and subtle animations that enable players to take first-time shots.”

The developer is also said to be hard at work in dealing with improving the series’ collision detection, meaning that player statistics in power, speed and weight will make a noticeable difference on the pitch. As well as visually and in big bumps, the improved system is said to be apparent in further situations, such as when a player’s legs are completely taken away from him, or simply clipped… in the latter case, he’d be able to carry on running if his vital statistics deemed that he was strong enough, for example. Looks like Chelsea’s Drogba could be a bit of a pickle for the developers on that one…

As for the Nintendo Wii-specific version of FIFA 09, Electronic Arts is said to be doing the honourable thing… and nicking the revolutionary controls from Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, touching them up and using them as its own. Automatic passing is touted, as well as the ‘Footii’ mode, in which teams of 8 Miis compete against one another.

FIFA 09 is planned to be released this autumn.

Dont know if this is true or some kind of joke but if true then it's great that it's recognised that this is the way to go for Wii football games (or soccer for US readers - dont know why it's called that you dont kick the balls with your socks).

EA is really getting the hang of this Wii business.

Good to see that there actually is competition between 3rd parties to develop a better football game for the Wii.

Oh man... poor Konami. I hope they can outdo what they have started.

gonna be interesting - EA's licence vs Konami's 2nd iteration and already having the basic game to just build upon.  Who knows but guess this may be the first time I actually buy both Pro evo and Fifa.

I think FIFA will kill Pro this year but as for the "250" improvments EA claim to have made I call BS on that.

Thats referring to the 360 / PS3 versions but in terms of Wii i'll be keeping a close eye on this. Depends if pro evo has more modes and editors this time around for me personally.

FIFA09 is going to be 10x better from PES2009, at least in the HD consoles. To be fair, the Wii PES owns FIFA...

I'll wait for PES 09 on Wii.

EA may as well just delete all the FIFA source code and go buy the entire Konami PES team.

If they just try and copy PES they will always be one step behind the mighty SEABASS and his team.

PES 2008 had many problems, but it was still easily much much better than FIFA. I think the real problem is, from what interviews i've heard, the PES team at Konami is just too small to be producing so many version of the game every year. PS3/360/PC, PS2/PSP, DS and Wii. That's 4 different games every year. Not to mention each platform needs different optimisations. That's 7 versions. Madness. Though I think the PS2 will only see one more PES game.

Considering that both series should be improving for '09, why not just wait for reviews?
