First FIFA 09 details: “250 key improvements” promised

The 2008 edition of Electronic ArtsFIFA Soccer and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer saw the gap in quality between both lessen considerably, with many claiming that EA had finally knocked Konami from its perch at the top of the football simulation tree for the first time in a long time. Proving that it isn’t content with resting on its laurels, EA has announced that FIFA 09 will include “250 key improvements” over last year’s effort.

FIFA 09, we’re promised, is set to include (according to Gamesmaster magazine):

“…improved responsiveness that allows for quicker release of the ball, greater urgency in the off-the-ball running, a new jostle system that takes into account the strength of the players when going shoulder to shoulder and subtle animations that enable players to take first-time shots.”

The developer is also said to be hard at work in dealing with improving the series’ collision detection, meaning that player statistics in power, speed and weight will make a noticeable difference on the pitch. As well as visually and in big bumps, the improved system is said to be apparent in further situations, such as when a player’s legs are completely taken away from him, or simply clipped… in the latter case, he’d be able to carry on running if his vital statistics deemed that he was strong enough, for example. Looks like Chelsea’s Drogba could be a bit of a pickle for the developers on that one…

As for the Nintendo Wii-specific version of FIFA 09, Electronic Arts is said to be doing the honourable thing… and nicking the revolutionary controls from Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, touching them up and using them as its own. Automatic passing is touted, as well as the ‘Footii’ mode, in which teams of 8 Miis compete against one another.

FIFA 09 is planned to be released this autumn.

Dont know if this is true or some kind of joke but if true then it's great that it's recognised that this is the way to go for Wii football games (or soccer for US readers - dont know why it's called that you dont kick the balls with your socks).

EA is really getting the hang of this Wii business.
