Forums - Sony - PS3 price cut hot potato passed again.

As long as they don't have a massive battery recall (or any other historic recalls) in 2007, their financials should already look brighter for FY07.  I think Sony is gearing up (e.g., the cost cutting in manufacturing and the layoffs) for a price cut.  It's just a question of whether it'll be this year or first half of next.  By the way, what Sony did, biting the bullet (missile?) for its batteries, Microsoft should be doing for its 360's.  That's how you earn consumer trust.  An oft-cited example in business schools is the Tylenol recall back in the day (1982).

Why do we now have two topics on this? I don't mean two threads that basically say the same thing -- I mean two topics with literally identical titles and contents.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Sadly, if they cut the price by 100$ as everyone wants them to, they will easily lose another 900million + from the PS3. Those PS3's in their warehouses still cost 800$ to make, the savings Sony should have seen for the PS3 would have no effect until after all of the warehoused units are sold off and production is ramped up again. Right now production is at a bare minimum, meaning it could still cost 800$ for every PS3 that is still slowly trickling off the line due to contract deals with the assemblers, parts dealers etc.

I am not trying to sound mean here, but that is $800 per console already spent. If they don't cut the price, the units don't get sold and Sony losses all that money permanently. If they sell it at a loss they at least recoup some of their losses.

I agree, It is already spent, at least they could stimulate some cash flow of of the PS3, then if it sells as good as they want, then they can mass produce, and wiegh in at the lower price and attract more developers and try and secure exclusives!

Honestly, I might speak for other ps3 owners but with a price cut,/possibility of exclusives, this might end up being a nice xmas present. Even some wii/360 owners may pick one up as well....who knows?

As other's have stated, dropping the price could be detremental to the entire company.  Keeping the price as is and holding hope that a few games will sell the remaining stock is a much smarter move at this time.  They need to sell those 2.2 million consoles at 600$ before a price drop can even be discussed.  When the 2.2 million PS3's are officially sold and new stock is ordered by retailers, we may see a price drop.  I still don't expect to see one until 2008, which is reaaaallly going to hurt.

As a company, they need to figure out what is more important for them at this time, market share or profits.  If profits are most important, then they need to consider their next move very wisely.  There was a lot of talk before the PS3 was released of a PS2+ system.  Basically another redesign of the PS2 with some built in memory and a few improvements here and there.  I wouldn't be suprised if this option is being looked at very closely right now.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

hum,
a new PS2 with PSmote LOL

well, i just want to say that

I think it is easier to handle AND recover from profits lose
than market share lose

I would be ecstatic if Sony decided to drop the price of the PS3. I know that it would move up my anticipated "buy" date to get one. Money isn't the reason why I haven't bought one yet, it's the lack of quality games. There are maybe 2 games out right now that I'd enjoy and play a lot, but once there are a few more and a "must have" game released I know it will be time to jump on the PS3.

Even though i have a 360 already, I'd rather play a game like GTA4 on the PS3. It could be nostalgia for that because I always played my GTA games on the PS2. I just think that in the end, the reason why I want the PS3 is because it's the most advanced system (barring controls like the wiimote, which honestly doesn't interest me) out there and will provide future technologies that will come out in the years to come.

Don't underestimate the power and money that Sony has. They can afford to take a hit on the PS3 if it means that they will increase sales in games, as well as Blu-Ray movies. Not everyone will jump on the Blu-ray movie part, but I have a feeling that a good portion of those who buy the PS3 will. Also, the typical Playstation owner buys at the least 2-3 titles a year, with some buying many more, and some buying only 1-2 a year. With the release of many new anticipated titles coming out, even those that are multi-platform, they will still sell their fair share. For those who haven't bought next gen and are debating between the 360 and PS3, if the price difference between a PS3 and a xbox premium is only $100, they may decide that the PS3 gives them more for just that $100 difference.

I agree that Sony won't cut the PS3's price for the sytem alone. It will be for the good of the company. In that case, if they feel that a price cut will stimulate game sales, which are always profitable, they may have one. Or if blu-ray is about to hit mass market (and it doesn't matter if HD-DVD is still around or not) before the PS3 is profitable, but will likely put blu-ray over the top to cut the price, Sony will do so.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

its not neccessarily true that they wont cut the price this year... gamecube cut their price after 6 months.. so did the original xbox.. and everyone knows how much the xbox lost on every console made.... expect them to cut the price at least down to 50 or a hundred dollars this year... they just cut the price to blu ray players i expect the ps3 to follow suite this year... hell even the 360 is still losing money on each console made... this generation is turning out to be different though

I'm hearing conflicting reports on this, and haven't seen any reliable source confirming it either way. This probably means that if the 360 is losing or making money, it's a very small amount (i.e. close to break even point).

i remember an article about this last week i'll look it up and post it... what you are hearing are fans saying that its making a profit you never once heard microsoft say that..... people just assume since ps3 is losing money that the360 is making money.. its time to inform people of the truth
