Forums - Nintendo - So is it safe to say that Wii won the console war this gen?

The only people who dont think the wii has won are those who dont see it as a true competitor in this generation.

Which is sheer lunacy to be honest

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Now that you mention it, Wii does have a bit different audinence. Naturally some of Wii's audience is the same as PS3 and X360's. I don't want to guess the numbers but Wii has a wider audience. Not to say they didn't compete with each other but just as a reminder.

Not likely, did you saw the sales of DS? When Granny & Soccer Mom stop supporting Wii, it already reach 100 million like the DS.

Not all of my reasons are necessary for Wii to stop selling so much more.

I'd like to remind that a year ago pretty much everyone was saying PS3 would fail and never pass X360. Just look at what we have here now and what we are going to have... You need something to base your claims on. Most of you don't seem to have done so - you just look at current numbers.

Claim? How about the claim from you? The (Soccer mom & granny)wider audience of Wii is too wide, do you think Wii got more support because of increasing of Core gamer in the World? Hell no. The core gamer may represent as 0.0001% or less in the world, the wider audience? 10%, that is enough to be the King of console world. That's the reason for explaining Wii's selling is the fastest ever, even compare with the PS2(the previous fastest selling console).

Poor PS3 Sales Means Smaller Losses

"Actually, because the number of units sold was not as high as we hoped, the loss was better than our original expectation," Quotes from Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda.

The Wii is the winner as long as it stays in. Meaning, Wii will be the best seller for it's life cycle. But, PS3 which has a planned extra 3-4 years in it's life cycle could possibly catch up or come really close to Wii's final culmative sales.

"Wii too(tm)" will be a monster tho. Second generation blue ocean is going to melt Antartica.

Well, well, Captain Obvious strikes again and tells me about the size of different audiences. Did you read my reasons at all? I was talking about the possibility of Wii going out of fashion or something like that. It is extremely unlikely they would stop buying Wii but it they did, it would be disastrous. Also, if PS3 manages to penetrate the casual market (which it will, it's just about when and is it in time; I wouldn't expect it anytime soon) it will be much more difficult for Wii.

wait what...haven't we said it since teh first month of sales?

In the short term (next 6 months) I think it is fair to say that the Wii will continue to dominate the market and sell at (roughly) the same rate as the XBox 360 and PS3 combined; after GTA4 I don't think you can really argue that any game will motivate gamers to start buying either system at its current price to the extent that would be needed to change this.

In the mid term (next 6 to 18 months) I think that the best case for the PS3 and XBox 360 is to hold 45% to 49% of market (combined) and for one of the systems to have only been outsold by 30 Million units by the Wii.

After that it is possible to see the PS3 and XBox 360 attempt some sort of a comeback, but it would take many years to close the gap on the Wii; and if they were successful and started to catch up to the Wii, Nintendo could soon release a new inexpensive console which would erode the selling features of the PS3 and XBox 360.

Yes is safe for most of us, but lets wait for MGS4, after that, there will be no doubt (For the fanboys anyway)...

fact that third party titles so far sells better on Xbox 360.

Wii 3rd parties sold only 1 mil less than ALL 360 titles (1st, 2nd and 3rd parties) in their first 18 months in US compared to first 18 months of 360 in US (their strongest market)

so actually, even 3rd parties sell better on wii than 360

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

I agree on the overwhelming Wii power in the short term, in the long term it will be very difficult to the second to catch Wii before its production ends. Given Moore's law etc., Nintendo will be able to launch a Wii2 more powerful than PS3 at less than 250€ without losing a cent even at the beginning in 3 to 4 years, but more likely 6 if they want it to be, below that price theshold, much more powerful than PS3, and they'll try to refine Wiimote, the Board and Nunchuk too, eliminating whatever flaw or even only limit forced by present economic and technologic limits, for example they could eliminate the need for IR sensors, increase precision, devise a mode to move the player character around with the same ease and intuitiveness Wiimote moves its arm (this could be very easy if the Balance Board becomes included with Wii2, I think). Obviously Sony and MS won't let Nintendo catch them unprepared again, although it's obvious that adding wiimote clones to their current gen consoles won't have significant effect now, the only reason to do it this early is to gain experience on time with a view to next gen. By Wii2 release, anyway, PS3 and XBox360 prices will have to be below 150€, perhaps even under 100€, if Nintendo manages to lower launch price to 200€ (*), to keep on existing in the low end market and avoid being blown away.

(*) Although I think they'll keep the 250€ launch price, as it makes them earn more money and facts demonstrate without any doubt that's a price that doesn't scare away users.
