Forums - Gaming - Why the Wii still won't see so many multiplatforms games

Wii will see more exclusives definetly.

But even if the math did not add up and wii took over the market share...PC gaming destroys wii alone. And most games can be made to work PS3, 360 and PC route... even Street Fighter 4 :)

Its funny but if this keeps up, PS3 and 360 will have to start working together to stay alive...

Yes, I didn't want to mention PC Gaming because these days it's very hard to get any significant revenue number from PC games sales...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

nah. I'm still betting on Wii getting primary development on most games soon with PS360 getting ports.

Especially once Wii's marketshare is >50% at the end of this year.

It won't be there by the end of year on the market that is accessible to the Western developers for sure...

Japan is nice and all but it's just not a market any western developer has been successfull at targetting...

How do you mean Japan is nice? Didn't you notice the wii is doing even better in the rest of the world?

Wii has a 69.2% marketshare in Japan.

It has a roughly 41% marketshare in the rest of the world.

41% is not better than 69%......

No , but it seems HD console fanboys are combining the ps3 and 360 now against the wii.

Where are nearly all of the biggest software developers? or atleast the greater majority? Japan matters a lot.

Japanese developers are different from Japanese consumers.

Several different Japanese developers make games for the 360 although the 360 and its games sell terribly in Japan. It's easy to claim that userbase is a factor, but architecture is far more important. If you mean that the HD consoles are getting ports of the Wii version, than you've completely gone marbles. If you mean that the Wii will get build from the ground up while the 360 version will be ported from the PC and then to the PS3, then that's perfectly reasonable.

I think everyone is probably right ...

When it comes to genres which have been highly successful on the PS3 and XBox 360 (like First Person Shooters, Sports Games, Racing Games, and Sandbox games) it is highly likely that developers will continue to focus their efforts towards the PS3 and XBox 360; this doesn't mean that the Wii won't get a version of these games, but it is more likely to be handled as its own game where they focus on the strengths of the Wii.

At the same time the Wii will see a lot of exclusive games (including games in the genres the XBox 360 and PS3 are strong in) because its large and rapidly growing userbase will be able to support these games without the need to port these games; some of these games will be made by smaller publishers who can't afford HD development, while others will continue to be made by the largest publishers.

Where the Wii will likely become the standard platform (and the PS3 and XBox 360 will see ports) is from licenced games. Within 12 to 18 months the PS2 is not going to be seen as the dominant console on the market anymore, and developers will need to ensure that their game that needs to release at the same time as a movie is made for the new dominant platform (the Wii); they could produce a seperate PS3 and XBox 360 version but those additional costs would never be recovered in the sale of the game so it probably won't happen.

Considering the Wii is now the number one console in everywhere from Japan to Guatemala, i think third party developers will slowly start taking much more of an interest in the little console that could

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

So if you look at the worldwide minus Japan you have :

Wii : 20.3 millions

Xbox360+PS3 : 28 millions.

That's still 40% of the market. I don't think a shareholder for any 3rd party developer wants to hear that 40% of the market will be ignored, especially having a portfolio on the side ndicating the success of the wii.

Anyways I think your point is good, except that you should be more specific. The Wii won't see many HD multiplatform games ported over, because developers will justify that the cost of such development may outweigh the profit made, especially when you consider this market overlaps. There's such a thing as owning more than one console.

The Wii emphasizes different values than the PS3 or 360. It will be very difficult to design a single game that appeals to users of both types of consoles.

For developers, this is a boon as they can fine-tune their games for a single engine instead of watering it down for all consoles.

For publishers, they'll hate it. They want the most exposure possible.

For customers, it won't matter. They either own a Wii and will buy Wii games or buy a PS3/360 and buy those games.

So um...I agree?

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

I totally agree.

The thing that prompted my post is that fact that every single time a PS360 title isn't announced for the Wii we get a huge thread in the Nintendo forum complaining about it so it seems it does matter for some customers though....
