Forums - Nintendo - What will happen to 3rd parties that ditch the Wii and continue on ps360?

Which will greatly reduce their revenue to invest in more games.

At the moment big Ps360 games seem to be doing just fine. The only developer that can compete with the sales of Call of Duty (9million), Assassin's (6m), GTa (8m), Hallo(8m), Gears (5m), Oblivion (4m) etc. pp. is Nintendo. (And some party games)

and will have the developers who do make quality games for the wii

should such a strange animal exist.

the problem with the Wii is that developers cannot plan success. Only Nintendo can do that.

Pro Evolution soccer - Half a million sales and it was decent. This game also had a great innovative control scheme and was outsold by console that did not 2/1! And it was outsold 3:1 by a console that had less than half the market share!

Okami - 100k

Trauma centre:Second opinion: -Half a million sales.

All 80+ games so they were good, but what I wonder about is the fact that PES 2008 sold so BADLY on the Wii.

2 issues.

A. The Playstation brand has always been associated with the PES brand so most previous PES series owners instincts were to go for the PS version.

B. It came out months after the PS3/X360 version.

2 issues.

A. Good games shouldn't sell that badly when the market share is that much greater in a genre that is popular.

B. Doesn't matter, isn't this meant to be the BEST version because it takes advantage of the Wiimote? Coming out months after is only important for the hardcore market. Nintendo software often has delays between Europe and U.S for instance.

A. Most fans didn't know the Wii version was better.  Most fans don't read reviews.    They simply follow what they've always done....buy the new season on the same console brand they always have.

B.  See above and if you can explain to me how a delayed release against compeition isn't detrimental to sales, I'm willing to listen.

Far as I can see, you're intentionally ignoring the issues all in an attempt to debase the sales of PES on Wii.

Companies can certainly live without the Wii BUT it means living a more precarious life. PS360 gamer are more hardcore, more decerning and want the best. So you have to really spend big, and deliver. CoD4 is making mega-bucks. However by the same token, Haze will probably be a collossal failure. CoD4 has really raised the bar and making every other FPS look bad in comparison.

Ubisoft is giving a lot of support to Wii, but perhaps not the type you're looking for. Konami has as well. Epic - doubt they ever will - they're always pushed the technological envelope and will be happy staying with PS360.
The problem was the HD console market was dwindling/shrinking. Just look at vgchartz weekly sales for details, atleast in america. So what will happen now if Wii cannibalizing the HD console's market? What will happen for 3rd party developers still continues to develop for HD consoles?

No public owned company can afford to "ditch" the Wii. It's that simple. Sure Epic can do what they want and their core business is pure harcore anyway, but besides them and maybe id-software every other company has to bring quality titles to the Wii or get toasted by the shareholders.

Results have been very bad for software companies lately. PS360 games require enormous investments and their userbase isn't growing very hard.
Wii on the other hand will be around 50 (!) million units sold next april.
Investors know this (hell, I'm sure big investors check VGChartz) and will ask the board why on earth there are no quality titles for the biggest userbase.

Ubisoft is a bad example because they've delivered 2 RRR and Red Steel. You wonder why Red Steel 2 takes so long? Because they didn't expect the Wii to win and now it does they want to make it a quality title. Same with Rygar.

Konami semi-announced Castlevania for Wii. I know it's not MGS but certainly a major franchise. PES already made it to Wii and is selling well.

Capcom: Monster Hunter 3; Tecmo: Fatal Frame and we'll see much more.

Interesting rumours are going on inside SquareEnix at the moment. I'll be amazed if we don't hear anything of them soon.

I think theres wrong with your posts there,

1) When did Ubisoft announced Red Steel 2 coming for the Wii? And if it announced, where are the pics? The teaser? Do you mean that the conduit was the first to show gameplay footage than Red Steel 2?

It's clear that the game is coming. Matt Cassamassina said it's coming. Ubisoft said that a different team is handeling the game now (read: better team). So I'm not wrong, Red Steel 2 is in the making (as any idiot can predict since the original sold over a million).
I don't have a clue what you mean with that "the Conduit" sentence.

2) Since when did Konami "even" semi-announced castlevania for the Wii? Simply because theres a Wii menu on DS castlevania does mean that there'll be a castlevania for the Wii.

No sure, it makes much more sense that there is a Wii menu because there won't be a wii game. It also makes sense that Konami doesn't deny it is coming, but rather says they made a mistake in showing that pic.

Besides that it's quite telling that you won't touch the aruments I made regarding the shareholders, because you know it makes a lot of sense.

Regarding Suikoden: Of course it's coming to Wii. The series sells more than half of its total in Japan. The PS3 is close to irrelevant there. Suikoden is not Final Fantasy that can make it on it's massive fanbase.

Anyone that says PES08 sold bad on Wii is hilarious. It sold 500.000 in 3 months, while the other versions (including PS2, which is what a lot of people have) arrived in October. The football season was almost over when it launched, so essentially the game was dated when it arrived. And it was the first PES ever on a Nintendo platform.

What will happen to them is they will face development cost many times higher and be selling to user base many times smaller. Which will greatly reduce their revenue to invest in more games. Its just a bad business decision.

With Konami, Epic and Ubisoft etc they will no longer be top dogs and will have the developers who do make quality games for the wii take over their spot in the gaming world.

Ubisoft enjoyed sales of nearly 7.5m with Assassin's Creed.

Konami has MGS4 coming in two weeks.

Epic has enjoyed massive sales with Gears and has licensed their engine for use by some of the highest profile developers out there (Mistwalker, 2k Games, BioWare, Square-Enix, etc.).

I don't understand why Wii fans can't seem to acknowledge that some companies are going for something different and can succeed without the Wii being the focus of their plans. This isn't the sixth generation anymore where you had to develop for the PS2 or you died because it had over 2/3rds of the market.

This generation, the Wii is selling roughly PS3+360 numbers every week. Companies are finding a lot of success by multi-platting games between the two consoles. These doom'n'gloom forecasts for companies focusing on high definition games are becoming ridiculous.

A. Good game, wide appeal to lots of people of all ages due to the subject matter, poor sales. I don't get it. This isn't just a franchise, its the most popular sport in the world.

B. NPD data shows that 5% of console owners own 2 or more current gen systems. With 3 million PS2 games sold it shows that either there are a lot of dual PS2/Wii owners that bought the game on the PS2 or that the new Wii owners just aren't interested. I would pick its both of those factors. Still the sales are terrible compared to the other consoles.

I don't get it. Im concerned that the sales are that low.

The sales are not terrible at all when you consider all the factors people presented in this thread. I think you'll see much better sales for PES09 Wii than you did for PES08, provided Konami launches it at the same time as the PS2/PC versions. The vast majority of people simply don't want to own more than one version of the same game.

The people who bought PES08 for the Wii were probably in one of the following groups:

1- People who never had owned a PES game before.

2- Hardcore PES fans who don't mind having more than one version of PES08.

3- People who specifically waited for the Wii version of the game.

To me, this is more than enough to explain PES08 Wii's sales (which frankly aren't that bad for the short timeframe we're looking at here).

If Matt from IGN says Red Steel 2 will released on the Wii, it will released on the Wii. After all, he said and confirmed that Kid Icarus will be released on the Wii even its a 20 year old franchise that never been touched before.

The HD market is not dwindling in any way.  It is growing and still gaining speed.   However, Wii is far outstripping them and stealing marketshare - or prehaps increasing the size of the market and having a bigger slice of a larger market than existed before.

Tons of games are profitable on HD consoles on their base is still growing and will continue to grow.   The one issue is that neither will have a large enough userbase than 3rd parties will want to do exclusives for either platform but that's a bonus for HD owners as either system will have the games you want.

Agreed :)

Like I said earlier Activision and Ubisoft had record years in 2007 without focusing on the Wii. We could turn back to the Wii fan and ask : why would they want to change a winning formula ? ( change on success is not something the shareholders will push for, to answer the shareholder argument).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
