Forums - Sony Discussion - Bluray vs hddvd - HD-DVD Buyers Beware

@ Golvellius

Note Resistance, Motorstorm and Oblivion are first generation PS3 games though. Also note the PS3 has over 10 times the amount of memory available as compared to the PS2.

With regard to the DVD name, you will have to ask yourself how much you really value the brandname versus the technical benefits provided by the Blu-Ray format, also considering the vast majority of the original DVD consortium founders is actually pushing for Blu-Ray disc.

Blu-Ray is far superior than HD-DVD. Why go for the lesser quality? Blu-Ray is proven to produce better video quality than HD-DVD. Of course Blu-Ray will win. It's practically the only reason to buy the Playstation 3. And those Blu-Ray cases look so cool. Nice and blue. The HD-DVD cases look too reddish-brown, and don't look as nice. Blu-Ray discs are more durable, and contain about 52 GB, while HD-DVD discs contain about 30 GB. HD-DVD discs are only 30 GB. Come on! Blu-Ray!

"Blu-Ray and HD DVD both use similar technology. If HD DVD hardware technology drops in price, so can Blu-Ray players. The initial disc production cost benefit of HD DVD, as it uses the older DVD replication methods has been overcome and on average Blu-Ray discs are produced cheaper than their HD DVD equivalents."

HD-DVD discs still costs 30% less then BR discs.  Also BR lasers are also still more then double the price of HD-DVD lasers.  As for mass production, Sony has limited the number of commercial BR producers to 9.  Less competition = higher prices.

The biggest problem I have with the format is that Sony chose a more difficult way to do something relatively simple.  I'm not saying that HD-DVD is going to win.  I'm thinking that BR is trending the right way.  But, I cannot comprehend why Sony would have switched to Blue laser diodes, a new and un-tested technology, when all of the advances were more then capable with existing technology, at a much lower price.  Trust me, if your PS3 came with HD-DVD you wouldn't be complaining.  If my 360 came with BR, I wouldn't either...  Unless they tried to charge me $600 for it.

With new movies Blu-Ray goes really high right now.

Edit:

This HD-DVD peak (April) was just a part of celebration of HD-DVD anniversary...

in my opinion Blu ray will win... i almost bought one the other day at best buy.. i was asking the guy about high definition movie formats and he said blu ray is definitely the hot seller... he said ever since the ps3 released he's noticed more people purchasing blu ray over hd-dvd

Blu-Ray prices seem to be well below HD-DVD pricing right now:

Average Amazon.com price:

Blu-Ray $27.20 vs HD DVD $41.40

Also Amazon.com doesn't seem to stock many HD DVD copies compared to Blu-Ray:

Blu-Ray 75548 vs 24383

You said "If the battle for the high definition format would have been more democratic there wouldn't have been a format war, it would be Blu-Ray and nothing else". That is the only reason why I brought up the issue with HD DVD being the "official" DVD successor, to show you that unlike you were claiming there even was a voting (the epitome of democracy actually).

As for the disc size, let's leave it at that. I do not argue that the disc space offered by a BD is handier than having to compress all data to the maximum extent and maybe having to split the game into 2 or 3 DVDs. I'm just saying one could live without it.

@ MikeB

That's pretty interesting but I think higher average price of HD-DVD is a result of pretty broad selection of multidiscs compilations like Matrix or Planet Earth for HD-DVD...

I think it's cheaper to release movie on one Blu-Ray disc than on one HD-DVD + standard DVD bundle...

Sure looks like it

I'd agree MikeB, I also look at 'eProductWars' now and again, and I don't think HD-DVD is winning on any of the tables. And although it's based on Amazon data, that's still a fairly fair representaion as that is a place where people buy many of their DVDs on, rather than using Amazon data to guess console sales as few people buy their consoles from Amazon.
