Forums - Nintendo - finally got BoomBlox and my opinion is...

Maybe boom blox should've had an edgier feel, maybe some more realistic guns in it, or bad ass looking cartoon characters with some angst to them, a few of them with emo haircuts, others that belong to the military, make the menu brown and grey too, and add some hard rock to the sound track. Once it stops targeting family audiences, that's when it becomes a good game. Right now it's just shit regardless of how awesome it is. Maybe they'll release a patch later to make it good.

Boom Blox is bullshit? EA or Steven Spielberg decided to make a high quality game for the mainstream people, who is used to constant shovelware thrown at them from greedy publishers trying to make quick buck and somehow, it's bullshit. Boom Blox isn't just meant for children, you know but for everybody (including core gamers). Sorry, but saying a quality game deserves to bomb because you think it's meant for children just smacks of ignorance. Oh yes, with time, they can buy all of those games you mentioned. It isn't a simple matter being able to only buy one game.

Fun, accessible, addictive. What more could you ask for?

Not much indeed. But if I had the choice, I would also ask for it to be fulfilling, and to give me a completely new experience, maybe to learn something, to make me a better person, to raise my confidence, to make me healthier and smarter.

Guess that's a bit too much to ask for from a puzzle game though.

Take a lesson from my good friend Vagabond over here. That is how you properly troll a board. Seriously, he has the word "angst" in his post. Automatic win. Learn from this lesson, and come back when you're ready.

Yes, because you should always listen to what PR says.
Here is an interview with the game's producer.

VideoGamer.com: Do you think that Boom Blox has hardcore appeal?

Amir Rahimi: I do. I absolutely do. To be quite honest it was a bit of a surprise to us in the development team, when about halfway through development we started having fun playing the game. It started out being just a family game, a game that would get kids excited. Every single person on the team had come from a hardcore game, we're all hardcore gamers. I don't think we could help but to make a game that was appealing to us. It was intrinsic.

About halfway through we realised we were onto something. And I've got to tell you, we've done an amazing job of making the game very acceptable to the casual audience but also have a layer of depth that is going to be really appealing to the gamer.

VideoGamer.com: I guess core gamers will be most interested in the user generated features. Do you see players uploading levels online on the Wii?

AR: I absolutely do. There's so much flexibility in this editor. The kids for the casual audience, they love to build something up with a ton of bombs and blow the hell out of it. For the gamers, they can get really complex and build interesting mechanical things and then blow them the hell up. And you can very easily share it online.

Interview with the game's creator.

What's the target audience of this game?

I'd say that our target market is eight plus but if the child is using the Wii, it's hard to imagine any child who wouldn't enjoy BOOM BLOX because it doesn't require that you have to read and it's very simple to learn. I mean, if they're very young, they would have a difficult time finishing every puzzle in the game because some of them are brain-twisting challenges. They take a bit of thought, especially to get them perfect and get the gold medal, but that wouldn't stop a young child from having a wonderful time with it. In fact, my nephew who is only six, does a wonderful job of painting and putting a bunch of animals out into the world and have them interacting with each other and building stuff that topples over and ends up squealing in delight. It's a very wide range of people who will be entertained by this game.

In short, Boom Blox isn't mean JUST for children. What did you say about failing again?

Wow.You don't get it.This actually proves my point.

The result is basically a game targeted to a younger audience, ignored by it along with the mainstream and ends up being praised by the hardcore gaming press(lol wut?) and this explains why.

Notice the clash of different ludological goals in the answer to the second question?

If you knew about how kids interact with their games you'd have spotted it already.

If I may, I'd like to borrow a quote from a legendary Muay Thai fighter.

Haha, so you will not play the game -even though it's awesome- just because the game isn't marketed towards you?

Well yeah I guess that makes sense.

And you don't get it. I didn't say this game wasn't meant for children, I said it wasn't JUST meant for children. As Steven Spielberg said himself, he made this game so he could play it with his family as the game wouldn't restrict itself to some niche core gamers. And if you had bothered to read the interview, the developers also created the game that would also appeal to core gamers, which is why it has been praised by the gaming press. Not to mention, more than a few people on this site has bought the damn game. You think they would do that if EA made the game exclusively for children. For you to say the bomb deserves to bomb because you think it's meant for kids is incredibly dickish and is exactly the problem gamers have today.

It's not he won't play because it isn't marketed towards him, it's that he hopes it will bomb because it isn't marketed towards him. That makes sense, too, but is an incredibly shallow reason.

call me stupid but I thought I had a good reason to buy and play the game - that reason being I enjoy it.

it seems though that this game has got a decent boost in sales this week in others increasing from 26,000 to 40,000. If it can sell on the same track as wii pro evo did in others then with US boost it should do decent figures.
