I will just say this and be gone : If you think Sony decided to launch an elite product (expensive in its category) expecting to dominate market share, then you're delusional. As it's been said countless of times ( I shouldn't even waste my fingertips on this thread as it is) "winning" and "losing", it's all relative. It's not all said and done yet either. So If I were the OP I would let things play out instead of venting frustration over a redundant thread.

If winning is indeed relative, we could say that Sony is losing because they're not doing as well as the PS2 was. MS and Nintendo are winning because their consoles are doing better than their predecessors.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Lets open this up and include something I'm curious about. I know why I love my Wii but I do not know exactly what made it the phenomenal success that it is.

It's not just price because cost cuts by PS360 have little effect. I don't think it's just the games because while there are fabulous Nintendo releases, it's no secret that the whole library has some serious weaknesses. Also major competitive releases like GTA IV have zip effect.

Had video games become so inaccessible that they were excluding many people that responded to the simpler motion control?

Is it a combination of all of these things? The record breaking sales and game sales show that Wii owners are real gamers and they are well on their way to be the dominating force in console gaming in terms of revenue in a success story that even surprised Nintendo.

The Wii has had to overcome a huge amount of bad press. A columnist this week wrote a almost hysterical diatribe repeating the same old the Wii is a joke, people put it on the shelf and don't buy any games (BS) crap. It was greeted by much of the existing gaming community with suspicion and often hostility.

So what launched this runaway train? Is it all about motion controls? Or is there something else?

Somehow i get the feeling that you're a douche Montana. Seriously, your posts about Europeans and downplaying the OP? That's how a moderator is supposed to act? Who gave you the right to say what thead is a good thread?

Really man, get a life.

Deep into the darkness pearing

Long i stood there

Wondering

Fearing

Doubting.

Sony's lost was nintendo's gain. While Sony and MS was focused on graphics, Nintendo knew that they couldnt compete with them, so they went the innovative way. They come up with something that's been done before, but made it fun and accessable to all ages. E3 2006 was tha reason Nintendo won, the lines, the new feeling of playing games differently. And above all , $250.

I personally don't care if a console is "winning" or "losing". Sega Saturn lost the generation and was a great console to play.

From a marketting point of view however...it appears both sony and microsoft made mistakes. Consumers want cheap...consumers dont want online or media capabilities...consumers want motion controlls...

The system that is putting the nails in PS3's coffin is not the Wii, nor the Xbox 360... But the PSP (Yes, Sony is killing Sony).

In order to explain it better you should see what the PSP offers:

  • Good graphics
  • Online gameplay
  • Media Capabilities
  • Internet apps (i.e. skype)

If you compare it to the PS3, Sony's console offers the same but better. But the PSP is portable, so any player would prefer it to a console because they can carry it everywhere and you can play great games with it (and there's no need to hook up to a HDTV and surrund system, is all "out of the box"). Since the gaming experience is almost the same, the PSP has the upper hand in many aspects. To many consumers it doesn't matter is the PS3 is a hell of a powerful machine, the PSP is "good enough for them".Just look at Japan and you see the PSP rising and PS3 decreasing.

Nintendo had a simmilar issue with the Game Boy. It actually was one of the reasons they created the SNES and N64 to counter the growing popularity of the GB series. We saw how the GB, GBC and GBA sales rising as the SNES, N64 and Gamecube sales decreasiing.... that's a secret behind the creation of the DS and Wii: two completely game experiences so one could not kill the other.

We don't have to let things play out, severe damage has already been done that can't be reversed this gen.  I'm not gonna get deep into it but Sony has lost about 3 billion dollars on the PS3 and is STILL losing money, their market share is pathetic compared to last gen and their exclusives are small in number compared to before.

Of course Sony expected PS3 to dominate, do you think they had it planned out to lose 3 billion dollars in 2 years?  No, they expected people to buy it, and software sales would carry them as the costs went down.  Instead they were forced to constantly cut prices to keep marketshare, and with it came tons of money.  If the system sold well and continued to sell well at $600 there wouldn't be so much of a problem.

@the_bloodwalker

yeah thats why PS3 outsells PSP handidly in 2 regions out of 3

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

How can you contribute GB to Nintendo's demise? Nintendo made so many terrible mistakes, but you point to the GB as the reason? wow. I suppose the DS is only holding the Wii back right now right?
