Forums - Gaming - Who is more likely to give Nintendo a run;next gen?Nintendo's demise?

@disolute

Sooo... NBA Jam 95 was it... is a platformer because regardless of the point being similar to a reality-basket ball video game you could turn on the flames and basically K.O. all the opposing sides players then land a slam dunk from the either side of the court and stuff.

I believe we need a new mimi for this; lets call it "non - (whatever the games genere obviously is here) games" Hmm, let's see now I have two more points to make I hope I don't forget them:

EA Big is a major leader I'm guessing in making Non-snowboarding snowboarding games, Non-Football Football games, Non-Basketball Basketball games and even non-Soccer soccer games. I believe the word your looking for is Fantasy saying that anyone of those games is the category I slapped their genre in based on the logic in your past arguement is ignoring what makes it still a basketball, football, soccer and snowboarding game.

I forgot my other point >.>, but you have to see by now that those games are fantasy games sure, but regardless you are snow boarding, and playing basketball and so on. In MKWii guess what, your in a car, your driving all the time and for pete's sake how the hell do you get on the rails? What on the rails game have you played where moving to avoid things is A point in the game? RE:UC gives you options at points for direction to go in but the truth is you don't even have directional influence, your basically saying all racing car games are "on the rails" which redefines the conjucted genre.

There's more but I believe I see the issue here and I can't resolve it, and for you I want to point out I'm not attacking you, just the logic in your arguement, you said something after my past post which made me believe you wanted to defy something, what exactly I can't grasp but your definetly not using a strong arguement to back up your anti-something tone. - That last line was directed at you by the way.

I see all the comments and I see the logic you people have however I stay firm on my statement about mario kart...

All those racing games have to do with speed and cornering hence they are racing games...they don't need gear changes to be considered racing, but they have to have gameplay that is centers around driving the best and fastest. The goal is to get from point a to point b the fastest... Sure Wipeout, extreme G etc have powerups as well...but they don't take away form the racing goal.

Mario Kart Wii has an extremely unbalanced gameplay where powerups matter more than racing, cornering or driving skill. Old mario Karts did not have this issue...

So this game comes down to who gets what powerups and who shoots the other guy down. Not to mention the game modes which are all about shooting turtles and have nothing to do with racing...

In any case, collecting powerups...shooting turtles...that sounds a lot like another type of game to me...I see mariokart as platformer on rails.

The balance in Mario Kart is far from perfect, but most of the people I see complaining about the lack of balance are also those who have not yet mastered the game ...

In a lot of ways it reminds me of MMO games (like World of Warcraft) where on a daily basis you see someone post about how unballanced a class is after they get completely owned. My favourite example of this was when I was an enchanter in DAoC (I was the only enchanter past level 30 on my server because of how "gimped" they were) and I beat a Thane (the uber class of the time) because he tried to kill my pet before killing me; he made a posting on the forum and even one of mythic's representitives laughed at him.

Certainly, Nintendo could work on the balance and try to limit the likelyhood of 4 blue-shells appearing right after eachother, but Mario Kart is still a game where the most skilled player tends to win the most often based on their understanding of the racing rules in the game.

I don't think Nintendo will work on the balance and that is because it is actually quite intentional and functional.  Mario Kart is the kind of game that will often be played by people of widely different abilities. It's very popular with families.

Let's say Mom & Dad are playing their 12 year old son and his 6 year old sister. In a straight forward racing game the 12 year old boy would always win, Dad second while Mom probably would edge out the little girl. It's not much fun to NEVER EVER win so the first family Mario Kart game would also be the last. Now add in the unquestionably disproportionate attack on the leader and that adds just enough disruption to the game that even little sis will win once in a great while. The teen age boy will still win almost all of the time and will definitely win the levels and the trophies and unlocks but he won't so completely dominate the game as to ruin it for everyone else. Watch a family or a group with differing ages and gender play and I think you will see that it is brilliant not faulty game design.

And I don't care what anybody says, it is definitely a racing game, one of the best; it's just not a racing simulation.

1st things 1st Nintendo had a different stratedgy this generation then mixing mass media and hi end graphics into game play!

They went old school and inovation with motion and activity.

Next gen consoles need to be the family centric gaming workout centers. Still with cable and satillite and recordability of shows and the Internet Itunes and limewire will there be a need for movie rentals and watching tv thru a console???

or just another medium for recieving digital content?

What new inovative idea can be added to the videogame console thats wiimote esque in its newness????

I know Nintendo has all its game franchise's and thats thier staple for success!

And name brand so far this gen has Nintendo wiping the floor with everyone else.

So its upto creativ guy back at the ranch to come up with the next best thing So will just have to see what that is.

MKWii does require a degree of skill, the entier wind tunnel thing is a great addition, knowing how to cut turns on the inside while catching a drift, or releasing a drift on the inside turn to catch a bigger boost, or holding wind tunnels while drifting around corners to get a double boost, and so many other elements, like when to do a wheely on the bike, using your weight to control your opponents and so on and so fort, the game doesn't have snaking anymore so it automatically isn't a racing game? I'm assuming thats what your trying to say.

Mario Kart Wii is not a racing game but a platformer! that is sig worthy.

anyway Nintendo will never have a demise, people may think they have a demise (Gamecube) but they still make tons of cash. If Nintendo ever goes out of the market video games would die.

I don't know when Sony and Microsoft got into the idea that people wanted their video game console to run their whole entertainment center but it's a non-starter and they need to get over it.

- Nobody is looking for it. I already have something that runs everything, it's a AV receiver and it costs more than my Wii but it handles everything and outputs it over the HDMI cable and out to the surround sound plus it has a high quality FM and XM radio. A video console to do that would be a huge  monstrosity with a huge price tag. If I want to add more online capabiolity I'll use my PC thank you, it's cheaper now anyway and I already have it. All I want my video game console to do is play games. I've got movies, MP3, Tivo and everything covered.

-I want the console to stay portable enough to be able to take it in the car for my grandson to play.

nobody is likely to read this post, its so far down the list but i'll say anyways.

PS4. Playstation is a bigger name in gaming than Xbox. Also price isn't going to be an issue, is it SONY???

Blu Ray will likely still be the format. And it won't be so expensive to make. Shouldn't cost much more than the ending price of the PS3.

Let me just reitterate, Disolitude, when you say that Nintendo first party games are lacking in diversity?

Nintendo first party genres this gen so far:

Zelda: Action/Adventure

Mario: Platforming

Mario Kart: Racing - platformer

Super Paper Mario: JRPG/ARPG

Fire Emblem: SRPG

Metroid Prime 3: FPS/FPA - adventure shooter

Wii Sports: Casual/Sim

Wii Fit: Sim

Smash Brothers Brawl: Fighting

Warioware: Minigame

Soon to come

Disaster: Day of Crysis: Survival Horror

Icarus: Flight/Shooter?

Pikmin: RTS

Name another developer with as diverse a library of titles in a 2 year timeframe as these. There isn't one. I mean, it's just amazing how diverse their library is, I can't believe you said their first party lineup isn't diverse, lol. What the hell man?

One can argue that Mario Kart is not racing but a platformer...and metroid is not a FPS but an adventure game but I don not want to start that fight. Howmany franchises is that...Mario, Zelda, Metroid...Fire emblem and, Wiisports/fit.

Microsoft published games I can think off...all different franchises and different titles.

Racing - Forza, PGR4

FPS - Halo, Perfect Dark

Platformer - Kameo

Action - Gears of War, Crackdown

Sim - Viva Pinata

JRPG - Lost Oddisey, Blu Dragon

ARPG - Mass Effect

Adventure - Kingdom under Fire

Party game/casual - Scene it

Soon to come -

RTS - Halo Wars

Sony has just as much coming out...Not saying one is better than the other as that is to a gamer's taste...but on a technical aspect, Forza 2 vs mario Kart...hmmm?

Worst of all if we look back at some of those titles, they are a carbon copy of last gen games (metroid, zelda, smash brawl, mario Kart) with wii mote technology applied. What do nintendo employees do all day?

You still never explained how Nintendo games lack diversity, which was your original point, and which is wrong. Honestly, with the internet as big as it is, was this the best you could come up with?

Lets look at it another way. Everyone I know hates Forza 2, and everyone I know loves Mario Kart Wii.

What do Nintendo employees do all day? Develop for the company with the highest average review scores for 49.99 dollar or up modern gen games in the world.

Microsoft employees take RRoD calls all day, and Sony employees are hard at work developing their next console asap so they can put this debacle behind them.

Thank you for making my day by being the perfect generic Nintendo hater.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

"Demise" is a very loaded word. Sony isn't dead even though they experienced a monumental drop in marketshare and have lost billions of dollars. How about we just say "who is more likely to leap frog Nintendo in the console wars?" That's a more reasonable question.

I think Microsoft, simply because of XBL and Microsoft's amazing ability to slowly but steadily take over markets. Historically, they gradually build marketshare, and thus far this generation, they've increased marketshare, absolute sales, and revenue, and profit. I think XBL is the next step in retaining gamers; that is, it makes and Xbox 360 owner much more likely to buy an Xbox 720 than, say, a Wii owner would be to buy a Wii 2, or even a PS3 owner is to buy a PS4.

I could make arguments for Sony and even Apple, though. Predicting that far into the future is incredibly difficult, so I'll just agree that it's entirely possible that the Wii 2 will experience a significant marketshare decline in this ever changing industry.
