Speaking as someone who has put over 274 days of real time play into World of Warcraft, and who has had full tier 6 on two characters for 4 months, and also who has raided 6 hour periods, 6 days a week, and performed daily quests, daily for months straight to buy flasks for said raid....

....World of Warcraft CAN BE about as hardcore as any game ever created.

 

It's a common misconception about the game though. They've actually added a lot too it since those initial reviews 4 years ago.

It's going to be WoW. Insane membership * Insane subscriptions * Insane lifespan = a lot. Wii Fit would probably surpass it if it sold 10 million copies per week until 2 or 3 years after WoW dies, but that's not ging to happen.

Wii Fit had what? 100 people? And they can't have been working on it for ages neither, as it isn't exactly a hard to make game (but that doesn't mean it isn't awesome)

WoW doesn't have 10M paying each month, I think it has had 12M players in total, are you telling me that 85% of the players still play?

Of course, WoW is more profitable, but I don't think as much as people seem to think (at least I think they think they think)

World of Warcraft has right now 10.7 millions active subscribers, people spending money every month. I believe far more than 12 millions people played WoW, since there should be millions of ex-WoW players.

No, that's all revenue.

And we can't really know how much WoW profits b/c Blizzard is losing money developing Starcraft 2 and the other games we don't know about.

World of Warcraft has it's own mini economy.

Of course so do some less successful MMOs.

If your interested in Economy by the way... MMO's are an amazing subject. Little mini Faux economies that can be tied to real world stuff. That are often richer then a lot of 3rd world countries. But suffer from nonstop rapid inflation since more money is created with every killing blow.

There are people who deal in online real-estate. Like... actual real-estate agents. Some woman beat the estate tax by buying 2-3 million dollars worth of MMO land.

Blizzard was one of the biggest third party companies (revenue-wise) before they merged with Activision. They have come out with one game in the past five years. You do the math.

The company only merged with Activision because they had so much money that they didn't know what to do with it. Activision could better disperse that money to other projects and overall, both would benefit.  You know that something is crazy profitable when a company has so much money that they can't figure out how to spend it properly.
