Forums - Sales - Is $200 US the Magic Price Point This Generation

A lot has been said about when the consoles reach the $200 US price point in this generation, but is that going to be the mass market price point?  As long as the PS2 is still around and at $130 US will people see enough of a difference to come in droves to the current generation, or will it take a move down to $150 or less to really spur demand?

The Wii @ $250 US is still selling out. I think we have discovered the magic value/price combo. Price alone will not move consoles, perceived value will.

I have a strong feeling this is going to end in a flame war with PS3 fanboys claiming that the PS3 can become the winner of this gen when it hits $200.

The magic price point is apparently $250. The Wii has massive sales.

For the other 2 consoles, $200 is a good, round number that will attract a lot of buyers that today might hesitate a little to pay $349 for the awesome X360.

Well by the time either 360 or PS3 hit $200 the PS2 won't be a factor i'm assuming since both consoles have 2 pricecuts at least to hit that target and they lately seem to be going into a profitability mode meaning no pricecuts soon. By then i'm guessing PS2 sales will be minimal.

As far as the Wii it's too difficult to predict a pricedrop for them since they are still supply constrained. I don't see them hitting $200 till Holidays '09.

But I agree with luinil. Value is more important. Just like we saw in Others a cheaper 360 still gets beat by the Wii.

luinil whats the name of that anime in your sig.

Considering that not only is the Wii still sold out around here, but that retailers allegedly demanded that Nintendo charge $250 for the system before its launch, I'd say $250 seems to be the new $200. (Note though that some parts about that allegation really ring false, so...)

Wii set the non-holiday weekly US sales record in March, and then shattered it in April. It's average weekly April sales were 50K above what PS2 sold for the month.

Basically, this rhetoric is at least a few months outdated.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

On topic  Agreed. Both consoles must reach smaller pricepoints but I believe the 360 has to come down to 250 while the Ps3 to 300 both with a bundled multimillion game.

Off topic Where did you get that Read or Die gif ????
