Forums - Sales - Can Nintendo catch Sony?

@valdens

if you put DS in you would have to put in the gameboys too

now its already VERY UNFAIR due to it being 5 vs 3

This would mean the Wii would have to outsell the PS3 by almost 50 million Consoles this generation. It will never happen. Even if the Wii were to win this generation, it won't win by more than 25 million, and I still think there is a fair chance that whole thing could be very close when all said and done. Too many of you are misjudging this early jump by nintendo. Nintendo fans were forced to buy early, they have an advantage in price point , and front loaded all their big hits, and yes they opened a new portion of the Market. With this said we do not know where and when these "New gamers" will stop in growth. Some of you guys really make me laugh.

I do agree it is an unfair comparison of 5 vs. 3.  But for the entire generation, there is no way the Wii is only 25 million ahead of the PS3.  I would be shocked if the difference is less than 75 million.

Give me a good explanation on why the Wii will stop selling, and then Ill agree with you. Currently Wii outsells PS3 2:1 with not enough supply to meet the demand.

If you are predicting a huge PS3 comeback which will mean PS3 selling about 500k weekly for years, or PS3 selling at its current rate and Wii selling 0 units also for years, tell me how is that supposed to happen.

I think the laugh came when you read your own post.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

I agree with everyone who cries unfair but I thought it interesting given how close the numbers are and the fact that at least over the near term the numbers will get closer.

People have long talked about the strength of the Nintendo brand or "new markets" that the Wii has tapped. Playstaion defined those terms, but appears to have forgotten them.

I think the Wii will beat the PS3 by 50 - 75 million but how much gas does the PS2 have left?

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

That is definitely possible.  I'm seeing it more like 150 mil for Wii and 60 mil for PS3.

The NES and SNES were a huge revolution. The PS1 and PS2 were a bigger revolution. The Wii is an even bigger revolution.

So... of course.

@trestres.
A better question is why do you think it will Continue to sell at it's current remarkable rate over the years to come? The PS2 did not sell like it did simply because it was the PS2. It sold well because it put out AAA ip's throught it's entire lifespan. What big name IP's are you counting on to carry the Wii over the next few years? or are you counting on people to buy a Wii for games released in 2007 and 8 in 2010,11,12, qnd 13? I can name you ate leadt a dozen AA and triple AAA titles that will release over the next 3 or 4 years for the PS3. How many Wii titles in the same area can you name? GC sold 25 million units last gen, Nintendo stopped supporting GC. What do you think most GC supporters are playing today? thats right Wii. Sony is still supporting PS2. You guys are so seriously jumping the gun it's just laughable.

I thought it would be interesting to average out the sales per year that the companies have been manufacturing consoles. Sony Started selling Playstations in December of 1994. So they have been around for about 13 1/2 years Nintendo on the other hand has been manufacturing video game consoles since July of 1983. Nintendo helped save then grow the video gaming industry thanks to the NES. Both the PS1 and PS2 also helped grow the video gaming industry in their own ways. Nintendo once again with the Wii is changing how we play video games through interactivity. Thus bringng in more customers to their products and thus growing the market. By the end of the generation I could see the Wii selling between 150- 170 Million Units while the PS3 sells between 90-110 Million. I definately do not think Sony will hold the over all lead in consoles after this generation.

(I used wikipedia and VGChartz to get the numbers if they are off i was in a hurry)

NES- 62 Million
SNES- 49 Million
N64- 33 Million
GC- 21.75
Wii- 26 Million
Total= 191.75/25= 7.67 Million A year

PS1- 102.5 Million
PS2- 127 Million
PS3- 12. 61 Million
Total= 242.11/13.5= 17.93 Million A year
