Forums - Sony - Linger In Shadows revealed

There's an ongoing debate about whether or not games are art, but Linger In Shadows is a clear case of the art being a game. Based upon the concept of the demoscene and filled with bizarre, dream-like imagery, Linger In isn't a game. It's not a tech demo. It's not a 3D movie, a tech demo, or a puzzle. It's something in between all three, which our demoer called "real-time interactive art." It's also captivating.

Linger In Shadows unfolds like this: when you begin "playing," you watch it, just like a cutscene. It's rendered in real time. For instance, the bit we saw began with a close-up of a nest of stone-looking tentacles surrounding a glop of glowing goop. We then see flashes of a basset hound-looking dog, a fuzzy cat, a panda bear sitting at the entrance to a tunnel that appears to be mounted in a skyscraper, a strange Grecian statue on a sky-high pedestal in the middle of a city, and a couple pulsing, floating collections of cubes and spheres.

So ... you 'play' this game by watching it?

We already have those types of games. They're called movies.

So, it's a scavenger hunt inside a interactive movie, that's rendered in real-time all while masquerading around as a complex art-house film, but is really just there to show off near abstract artsy techdemos or at least that's what I'm getting out of that description. I'm trying to see if I'm missing something here, but it's hard to tell with that preview that's completely full of nonsensical concept game hype. Sounds like they were going for a more mature Pokemon Snap or Endless Ocean( both which are actually great games ) , minus the interaction, instead choosing to go freeze-frame scavenger hunts. This could develop into something more, but at it's very core it still doesn't sound like the typical thing an average ps3 owner would be going out to buy. That bizarre story or lack there of isn't helping promote it either. It sounds like some one was trying rip off David Lynch, but failed to pull off anything as coherent or clever. That or just the back story for PS3 commercial.

Sorry if I sound so negative, especially if you're really hyped about it. I do like having more creative games out on the market, but that promoting is just godawful and that little tidbit of a teaser story is damn weird. It's suppose make you want to know more, but it's really killing any interest I might of had. Dreamesque imagery can be cool in a game, but I think they might want to tone it down a little bit.

So.. you "play" by watching it?.. Well.. that's.. I don't get it.. what?

I never expected something like this till next generation honestly. I didn't think the PS3 was this powerful. Even I underestimated it and thought CELL v2 was needed for this.

Basically guys, think of this as a fully interactive 3D movie that you can interact and change what happens in it.
