Forums - Nintendo - According to Sean Malstrom, are we old or new world of gamers?

I admit Im a core gamer and Im in Playstation era, though I buy the Wii anyway. And I dont like the shovelware/casual crap/ports on the Wii, so what am I? What are we? Do we consider to be a new world or the old world?

want to know who plays the most time playing computer games online in the world?

mid 40's to 50's women... i kid not, look it up sometime, the average woman who is online and who plays games online spends more time playing said games than the 16-26yr old male does playing games....

I've got a Wii and a Ps3... And i've een reading some Malstrom-articles... WiiFit apocalpyse ... Lol, best of 2 worlds i'd like to call it... Wii + HD-console!

THE NETHERLANDS

As how Malstrom looks the current drift, the split between new and old world is before Wii and after Wii. Since this is just the begininning of the generation, we are the old world who is living the transition.

Malstrom actually splits gaming to 3 generations; pre-NES, NES to Wii, Wii and after.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

So what will happen in the old world then? Will they flush away with stream of tidal wave of new generation of gamers then?

ahhh I love malstroms articles! its easy to move into the new era of gaming when your a huge nintendo fan but when you have to let go of a favourite brand or something it can make it hard. But just like our parents love to listen to the music they grew up with we will always love to play the games we grew up with, I dont think the old world will disapear like in lord of the rings lol I think it will always be there, just like old record players ect.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

The new world gamers are the ones who come back from gamer drift, are new gamers brought in by the wii and the old gamers who "survive" the tidal wave (meaning they are ok with the new direction of gaming and enjoying it). So what does this mean?

Here is what is happening (basically i am summarizing what Malstom has said):

The old world and old world gamers are going to be washed away. Basically, become irrelevant. When he says this he means we will not see tons of games focusing on graphics and having epic stories and extremely complicated game play. Also, we won't see as many games with multi-million dollar budgets like MGS4, GTAIV, etc. They will still exist in some fashion, but just not in the numbers today.

Also, there will be many different types of games. Games for education, games for almost any type of group. WiiFit is just the tip of the iceberg. Shovelware will exsist, but it won't really make much money. (Shovelware is the ones who just use the crappy developers to make a quick buck with mini games etc. This does not include people who actually make a decent game for a different audience but puts time in it. WiiFit is like this as is Nintendogs. Also, good minigames would fall, in this. Just because it is all minigames does not make a game bad.)

The old world gamers are the ones who cannot accept this and quit gaming and cry over it. They will be like the PC gamers who cried over gaming dying when the NES came out. They may even quit gaming.

So, the question is how do you feel? If you are ok with the changing face of the gaming world you will be a new world gamer. If you can't accept it and are horrified, then you are the old world. This is what Malstrom means.

I know what ya mean yushire, I had a PS2 and bought 20+ games for it. I loved it. But, this gen i have a wii only and about 11 games. Some of the ps3/360 games I like and would want to play, but being just married I can't justify spending the money for the systems especially since i have no HDTV. On the shovelware, its ok not to be happy with shovelware and ports. Remember, as the wii continues to sell developers will put better teams on it, or die (especially if their shovelware sells poorly). Also, don't forget that not all games are for all people.

Now Playing: The Witcher (PC)

Consoles Owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, Game Boy, DS

At VGChartz, being mostly young males in the traditional console gaming demographic, and obviously being interested in gaming, we're mostly in one of two groups...

1. Existing gamers who fell in love with the Wii the instant they heard about it. These were actually the first people to come into the new world, before "non-gamers" did. They were likely "fringe" gamers who were increasingly unimpressed by traditional offerings. Consoles were overshooting them, and they may have just been playing browser or mobile games. They were the "first tier" of Nintendo's blue ocean strategy.

2. People still in the old world, who love the old values of high complexity, focus on graphics, serious tones, storytelling, immersion, whatever. These people will either eventually come into the new world, being converted to the values of the new world, which is the purpose of Nintendo's "bridge" games, or they will be abandoned. Not by Nintendo, mind you, but by the "hardcore" focused industry players who will have to run upmarket as Nintendo builds bridges further and further upmarket.

So, if you're in group two, I can't tell you whether you'll come to the "new world" or not.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Thats what I felt too, seem  Ninty left us for disruption for some kind of reason. YEAH, its temporary but a year long is alot of wait. Atleast its only 2 months till July I think thats the time Ninty will upstream the market...
