Forums - Nintendo - The flight of third parties, my take on the Wii and its shovelwares

Well I post the flight of third parties because thats whats happening in third parties right now. Yeah, there are some good third party games on the Wii but almost but not all of them are shovelwares, and like birds migrating to South to escape the cold harsh winter of the North,(sorry Im not good at geography so I dunno about the migration habits of animals) so as the third parties fly to 360 and PS3 to escape the cold non HD, non 10 million budgeted, non kick ass graphics of Nintendo Wii, which 3rd party developers wants to avoid.

Anyway, imagine this, what if because of a global warming and pollution catastrophe when birds DO GO to South and when they go there, the place were they migrating was a total disaster and not suitable to live even only for days? what will they do? Will they go North again or just live in a toxic swamp once they call home?

This is what third party developers facing now.

Thats why 3rd party developers dont want a Wii and they insisting developing great games on HD consoles. Because they dont want to work on a last gen console and last gen graphics. YEAH, its not because Wiis are attracting casuals, its not because mature titles not selling on the Wii, its not because Wiis have different market than other HD consoles, its not it, its because third party developers dont want to develop games for a last gen system.

Like malstrom said, theres no such things as casuals, only downmarket and upmarket, Nintendo only attracting the downmarket to expand its audience, its called disruption, even developers/publishers knows that. So whats with this casual BS thing then? Its only a excuse for third parties for giving us shovelware/casual crap on the system, even though what casual needs was only 5 games; mario and sonic, carnival games, wii play, wario ware smooth moves and wii sports. Rayman Raving Rabbids was cool when its first time it come out, the second not really much, infact, its worse than the first Rayman, and now theyll make a third game using Wii balance board? Why not make the Wii a new Prince of Persia game for once? maybe not, because of their excuse that mature games dont sell on the Wii. mature games dont sell on the Wii my ass...

What i post earlier, what if the birds that migrating to South realized that the place they want to refuge to was a mess? What will they do? This is what the 3rd party developers/publishers are facing right now remember the hardware sales of 360, ps3 and the Wii on the latest April NPD data, remember that the sales of Mario Kart Wii was greater than the sales of PS3 GTA IV in NPD data, and remember the downhill sales of both software data of GTA IV and hardware sales of ps360 on the latest vgchartz data this week.

I think 3rd party developers/publishers are digging their own grave right now(not in literal sense BTW) for ditching the Wii and giving us Wii owners bunch of shovelwares/casual crap and ports. Im not upset on how third party developers treating the Wii, since there are small developers/publishers wants to take advantage of the Wii right now, like Bionic Games, High Voltage, Platinum games, Grashopper, marvelous, Red Fly Studios and more... These small developers/publishers will be the key on success of the Wii, not THQ, Activision, Konami, Ubisoft, etc...

I stopped reading when you said global warming.

??? Too many analogies. I mean its hard to defend the disastrous state of affairs regarding third-party Wii games but I think fleeing is ridiculous. There will be good third-party games. But those take years to develop. And they are very expensive to make. So it doesn't help that success is so hard to predict. On the PS360 you can make a great game for a great series like CoD4, GT, GTA etc. and you will KNOW that it will sell millions. On the Wii? Who knows. Nintendo is raking it in but other companies who made lots of money with the Wii did it with crap like Carnival games. There are not many third-party blockbuster for the Wii yet.

^ Its only just an analogy, it didnt tackle with global warming itself, its a bad analogy on why I compared birds to 3rd parties but thats all I can think of.

I think it is much (much) simpler than that ...

Durring the Playstation/N64/Saturn generation most large third party publishers went through a 'growing up' phase where they replaced their existing executives with 'experienced' executives from the Television, Movie and Music industries. These new executives were able to market videogaming far more effectively towards the growing market of teen and young adult gamers by putting a focus onto the higher production values and more in-depth experience of videogames.

Many of the executives in many major publishers heavily discounted the Wii mainly because they had no understanding of why someone would buy a videogame with lower production values than another one that was available; this lack of understanding is similar to the moder focus of Hollywood on Special Effects and production values over acting, direction, plot, and characters. They see the Wii's success and are forced to respond and they mistake the success of games like Rayman Raving Rabbids to mean that Wii owners only want simple game experiences so that's what they provide.

We're begining to see the second stage now, where intelligent executives realize that one of the reasons Nintendo has been so successful with the Wii is that they have produced a wide array of games which appeal to the conventional gamer as well as the new 'Blue-Ocean' gamer; as a result you will see more companies react by producing more "Core" gamer games along side their "Blue-Ocean" games.

Actually,I didnt trust third party can do anytthing on the Wii right now after the bombardment of great titles heading to HD consoles this year when what Wii have was bunch of mini game/shovelware crap. Ubisoft making a new Prince of Persia game was one of them and what left us was Emergency Heroes... I only trust small developers can make decent job on the Wii.

You're optimistic about third parties on the Wii, I hope you're right though. But as for me, I will wait and see on what the big publishers/developers come up with. Anyway, just go to gametrailers and see the third party developers gamer's day offerings on 2008 to see what I mean. You'll be disappointed.

Just out of interest where do you see this beginning? Any concrete signs like game announcements?

You don't think there are reasons to be optimistic?

Pretty much every publisher has been promising more development for the Wii since (roughly) this time last year, pretty much every publisher has hinted at big game annoucements for the Wii over the next few months, and of those games we see announced a large portion of them are a noticeable improvement over what they have produced for the Wii so far.

Consider MadWorld which is being published by Sega and developed by Platnium Games:

Sega wouldn't be publishing this game for the Wii if they thought there was no market for it. Now, there is no way to dismiss this game as being shovelware regardless of whether the game turns out well or not.

As a reminder yushire, this same thing happened during the PS1/Saturn/N64 era. Many 3rd party devs had to deal with making their games 3-D when they were used to 2-D. They saw Super Mario 64 and cloned the hub structure ("collect 30 stars to access the next area!") without understanding the underlying nuances. For example, it took them years to make jumping good. Turok 64 was credited for being an FPS with decent jump mechanics(!) Contra and Road Rash tried to go 3D and failed miserably.

Eventually new games arrived like Spyro & Crash Bandicoot. They were new so they could take advantage of 3D platforming without being held down by old ideas.

Anywho, you read Sean Malstrom's "The Birdman Fallacy," yes? Right now we're at the point where 3rd party developers have stopped cloning MINIGAMEZ but haven't figured out what works yet. Patience young grasshopper.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
