NO.

Olympics are supposed to be void of all politics. Therefore to use these coming games as a way to attack China for its crimes is completely against the entire purpose of the Olympic games.

excuse me, but the main reason china is hosting the olympics is so its governement can try and make themselves look good, if thats not political, i dont know what is, the main reason countries wont boycott it though is balls, most leaders dont have them, i would have great respect for any country that grows a pair and says no to china, anyone who thinks the olympics arent political is living in a dream world where money and corruption dont exist, what needs to happen is proper scrutiny from the IOC, any country allowed to host the games should be doing so for the right reasons, not be an abusive government and countrys should lay out a finance plan when they bid as well.

Foreigners will see with Beijing, 2008, the Chinese government as the military dictatorship what it is Showcasing the Chinese military muscle to the world. China censors every aspect of people's lives as is always the case under a autocracy. Any anti-Chinese government propaganda is dealt with by force by the Chinese secret services. Opponents of China's government living inside China are silenced.

@Rock_on_2008: How dare China and India try and expand their economies, it's a damned disgrace.

@Profcrab: good point about boycotts and ELECTED governments.

Let's say we boycott the Olympics, then what? China loses face and a bit of money on tourism which is not exactly a large part of the GDP anyway and then......... China gets bad press in WESTERN newspapers (Chinese papers will say that the west boycotted because they are afraid of China's strength and are racist). In this regard you are playing right into the governments hand and feeding the propaganda machine and promoting ignorant nationalism. The human rights record will be brought into the spotlight for a few days or weeks and then what, business continues as usual? It doesn't make any sense.

China are terrible abusers of human rights. China is run by a Communist military dictatorship

While the Western world slides into a recession. India and China, economies grow and prosper at the expense of the Western world. For there to be a winner there must always be a loser. Such is life.

Do you realize that India and China are dependent on the western world to maintain their economy? If there's a recession in USA and Europe, they will also suffer.

Your view of the world is very naive. No one forced the world into being global, countries just jumped on the bandwagon because they wanted to.

Globalisation is crap. Getting cheap Asian labour to produce goods at lower prices forces people in the western world out of work. Unemployment in Western World goes up. People in western world protest against big busineses taking factories off shore to Asian countries. Globalisation has lead to increased profit margins to big business but at the detriment of workers in the western world - being forced onto the unemplyment line. Asian workers are paid less than 10th the labour costs of a worker in the western world. Asian factories use slave workers who are worked 18 hours a day, no sick pay, no annual leave and no superannuation- 7 days a week.

doesnt middle-east sound like a geographical position to you?
and im sorry to say, india lies in south eastern asia.

and i think human rights can afford to take a back seat to development in the developing countries, because human rights aint exactly what feeds the people.
as you mentioned your friend, there must be other people too who'd want their human rights.but that number is smaller than the people who get fed thanks to the system.when these numbers get reversed, i assure you, the government will be compelled to shape up. but until that day comes, i think its no one elses damn business what goes on there,as long as mass-murder of political opponents or innocent citizens doesnt take place.
and whats wrong with the olympics?
US shows off its strength and magnificence to the world on a yearly basis
cant little China do it too?

So you didn't read my post at all.  It's the most "polite" way to say arab over here.  When you say Arab, people get upset, sort of like when you say black.  Instead of saying middleastern despite not everyone being from the middle east, and african american even though for all you know the guy could be british.

See, I don't get this calling people African-American at all. Why even bother. They are just Americans. Like your example, he isn't African-British. He is just British

Here i thought this thread was about the Olympics in China......

Name a positive effect that boycotting the Olympics would have?

People will hate China more, don't go there anymore . China lose money of tourism especially Tibetians will lose money to tourism.

People will go to other countries then (Western probably) so China will lose money, Western Countries will gain money....

So far, I don't see any other positive effects..

Hmmm, Tibetian losing money due to "Olympic tourism"?? LOL, you do realize the geographical location of Tibet and those cities which host the Olympics, right?

One positive effect that boycotting Olympics will have?

*putting CHinese's horrible human right record onto the first page news.
*Forces the government to be more accountable to their actions.

Heck, worked  on Soviet Union before.

Where did I state the olympics where in Tibet? Sad for you but Tibet had the last years a rise in Tourism something that probably is destroyed for them now;

Shouldn't We boycot the USA for what they do in Iraq?  Always those human rights crap...

Do you call this human rights?:

What you guys did there is a good example for China Bravo!

pretty tame pictures in comparison. Do I need to post pictures of what happens in Chinese prison? Or maybe you can just google them yourselves.

After all, you can't possibly suggest that US has worse Human Right record than the Chinese, right? ;)

Somehow I don't think Tibetians put a few tourism dollars as high as their right to religion... wouldn't you agree?

Western doesn't really include the US when it comes to unemployment.  Our unemployment rate, even now when we are said to be entering a recession, is at level that European countries would dream to have.  The problem with many of those countries is that they have kept their tarrifs so high to protect the sales of their domesticly produced produces within the country but they can't sell them outside of the EU because they are priced too high and the unions fight tooth and nail to keep things the way they were before.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

Simple.  There are laws that specifically give you stuff based on your race in America.

If your any race but white there are scholarships set up to give you extra money in college.  You can sue if you think you've been fired due to racism.

It's even considered a worse crime often times if someone of one race beats up another person of an opposite race do to perceived racism.  There are also laws that prevent racism in housing and other things.

These laws would be inopperable without racial definitions.

Yeah the same sort of stuff happens over here. It's sad when you have to segregate people by race in government legislation. Same thing happens with religion here as well.

Yes

The deaths of 50 000 people caused by the people in China could easily been prevented by the corrupt government. The government approved the building of villages in well known earthquake high risk zones. Chinese government tsk, tsk. Shameful, but at least they are helping the people in that area.

The Burma floods a week earlier resulted in 100 000 people dead and leaving millions homeless. Burmese autocratic government did nothing to help the Burmese people in need and stopped foreign aids from assistance. In comparison to Burma, China is not that bad.
