Forums - Sales Discussion - The Official NPD April 2008 Thread

One week = 5 days for the GTA IV annoucement. GTA IV, according to Take 2, sold 6m in 5 days. NPD doesn't really add up with that at all, since Americas > Europe for GTA - especially when you look at relative install bases (15m vs 10m).

Very very strange data. I am not going to sit here and criticise since that would be unprofessional but I really struggle to correlate anything with the data we have or with common logic, last months sales, year on year or anything else.

Odd.

 +1000.

I feel the same way. Rather than being here poking holes at this number, I rather go and talk about actual games.

Well, in the UK alone it sold almost 1M already, couldn't you have been underestimated the rest of Europe a bit and sales are close to 1.5M there? Add in Canada and some other places and you end up in the 5.5-6M range. The 6M must be a rounded figure so it could be a few 100k less.

I completely agree, actually. The numbers don't make much sense.

Outside of our interests in the industry, however, short term hardware estimations are mainly useful for PR spin. NPD could be adjusting, we have no idea, and they could readjust next month. Adjustmensts are a big reason they wanted to reprivatize their numbers a few months back.

That said, these numbers will be heavily publicized and mainstreamed as NPD always is, but even moreso with the GTAIV release and the monumental lead of the Wii according to said numbers.

So, a lot of Nintendo fanboys will be happy basically.

However, that said, I think this could bring in more believers to the VGChartz fold, because in depth analysis seems to reveal holes in NPD numbers. That is always a good thing. So, look at it more as a VGChartz reaffirmation, than a NPD contradiction.

I would be very interested to see how these numbers were extrapolated from their sample size, or more to the point, I'd like to see their data on this, but we all know that isn't happening.

So do people still think the PS3 has a shot at 2nd place in the US despite GT5p releasing and GTA4 *supposedly* selling more PS3s than 360s and still selling less?

who cares? demand for both the ps3 and 360 is equally abismal at this current moment in time.

What?? It's not my opinion that nintendo have released no new AAA or AA hardcore ip's on the wii it's a fact. The other fact is comparing the wii's line up to the gamecubes line up of games their is very little difference between the two. Last gen the gamecube finished 3rd and most people agreed that was because the software wasn't good enough. This generation the wii is dominating and the only difference in software is wii sports, wii play and wii fit, all of which are casual games that have scored badly and hardcore gamers generally don't like them. The wii sells the most because it is the most popular console not because it is the best.

I'm curious as to how classifying games as casual and writing reviews of them based on opinion is a "fact."

Anyway, now your talking about Nintendo software development, not the Wii as a piece of hardware.

3rd parties have released AAA hardcore titles on the Wii, like Zack and Wiki, and No More Heroes.

Just keep your facts to yourself, if you feel like presenting an argument from now on, give us your opinions and we'll respect them, but don't act like we're dumb for not agreeing with you.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

To bring back an old argument ...

(Roughly) 80% of all videogame consoles in the previous generation were sold at a price of $200 or less, and I think it is likely that there is a strict limit on the number of people who are really willing to spend $300 or more on a console regardless of what games are available for it. What these numbers could really be demonstrating is that the PS3 and XBox 360 are hitting a point where (practically) everyone who wants an XBox 360 or PS3 and is willing to spend more than $300 already owns a PS3 or XBox 360. If this is true, without further (and rapid) price reductions the PS3 and XBox 360 could see stagnant sales rates or declining sales.

THE worl Is coming to An END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hd gaming is DONE..Go WI!!

IOI, is there any cahnce that NPD just couldn't make sence of the GTA launch week HW numbers and just decided to leave them out until May? I mean these number would make sence if they were the previous weeks numbers. I mean c'mon the month of the biggest game of the year and MS and Sony sell less than 50k a week when both had been selling above that all year. it makes no sence, and anyone with an open mind can seee that.
