Yeah, its impossible to port white engine to another platfom. Silly me, the cell doesnt use something as arcane as binary - its fundamentally different than every other processor ever made, ever.

the white engine cant be ported properly due to the fact that its designed to work with and bring out the Cell Processor + RS potential. It can be ported but with serious recoding due to the archetextures for the two systems being completely different. Theres major difference between 6 SPEs (all 7 possibly) and the PPE against 3 cores. Just like theres a difference between a heavily modified 7900GTX and a x1950 with unified shaders.

Just becuase these developers are making games for this console doesn't mean, they are thrilled with the hurdles it has presented, even Sony themselves commented on the diffuculty of squeezing all the power out of their system. The few that have defended it such as factor 5 have basically said, you get what you put into it(not exactly a shining declaration of it's ease of use), they haven't said it's a cakewalk. And by the shear volume of developers that have passionatly defended the 360 and it's developer tools, it's clearly the easier system to make games for right now.

 And btw Sony has also said themselves it's eaiser to create a game for the ps3 and port it to the 360 then the other way around making it easier for games like Gundam Musou to now be released for the 360 here in America(and Virtua Fighter), and as long as 360 continues to have a large gap over the ps3 in America expect that to become the norm.



Call me crazy, but I don't think we will see a game that uses all of the PS3's processing power for another 4-5 years. Much like the PS2, developers slowly learned how to unlock hidden power in the consoles.
That said, I think the whole "some PS3 games cannot be done on the 360" thing is a bit of a fallacy. Its a bit like how Sony said that Folding@home couldn't be done on the 360's CPU. This was true, but the 360's graphics chip handles the tasks very well.

Towards the end of the life cycle of a product programmers become miracle workers extracting greater power from aging hardware. This may be why the PS2 has such strong sales.

yeah, that is a problem of many people, they just don`t think, don`t believe. Just have a wrong opinion.

You see, when ps2 come, it had different architecture from pc, and it needed some time to achive ps2 potential, while xbox when came(after 1,5year), it had more powerful hardware and had similar to pc architecture, so it was easier create more graphicaly advanced games.

And now PS3, came (after 1 year) it also has more powerfull hardware, but because hardware is different from PC, developers need time, to achieve ps3 potential, that`s why today for many people is not obvious, that ps3 is more powerful.


p.s. on GDC07 and SGD07 Sony showed some amazing games and you still are not satisfied?

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.

 What's wrong with him? You just proved him right. He didn't say we'd never see a game reach that potential, just not a game to reach the full potential until 4-5 years. You proved him right by explaining how the ps3 hardware is different and would take time to reach this potential. Honestly what was said is about true for everything, the longer the system is out the better the games look. Are you saying that games this year will tap the full potential of the ps3 and the games 4-5 years from now won't look any better?



Why 4 years??? MGS2, FFX, GT3, DMC came on 2nd year os PS2 life.
And most ps3 developers admit, that to develop on ps3 is still hard, but EASIER then on ps2.

It`s not 4-5 Years. It`s only 1,5-2 years.
Gears of war came only after 1 year.
Ps3 only half a year on the market.
So, to wait 1 year, for games, which will surpass geas of war, is that much? people waited 1 year for geow and bought 4 mln. and now can`t wait 1 year for MGS4, FFXIII, GT5, Killzone2 ? LOL.

4 years is a bit random, but I'd like to think that PS3's best games of next year will be improved upon eventually. Especially if this system is supposed to last 10 years. I also mistakenly said "all" of the power will be unlocked in 4 years. It more like they slowly find little cheats or tweaks that do something better that the way it was done in the past.

I do expect GeOW to be improved upon over the next couple years by both consoles. I think that about halfway through the life cycle of a console, the developers have a few mega-games under their belt. At this point, you really see some great games. I'm not saying it will take 4 years for any good games.



There's only speculation as to what the PS3's full potential is so lets refrain from pretending anyone game is definitive of it. Sony's PR is known to lie and exagerate on these matters. Developers are coiy and evasive in comentary on such issues.

It's also really silly to act like these handful of developers are the dream team of the next gen. The Gamecube had just as many for it initially but as we all saw it was a fruitless effort. Let's not pretend anything is set in stone until the games are released.

Thanks for claiming the Xenos is a 1950 with unified shaders, you just made your own post invalid.

The point is the engine can be ported with some work, unlike many PS fans who claim its impossible. And its possible for square to scrape the white engine and port FF13 to Unreal 3, thus making a 360 version trivial.
