Forums - Nintendo - Korean Wii Sales

Starting the week of April 26th, Wii sales in the Others region of Others increased from roughly 3K per week to 16K. April 26th was also the launch day for the Wii in Korea. In the weeks since then Wii sales in Others Others has stayed above 13K. So it looks like Nintendo is Selling around 10K Wii in Korea per week.

There are a couple possibilities of what will happen in the future in Korea:

1) Wii launch excitement will die down and sales will go down to 5K per week

2) Sales will be stagnant for the near future and stay around 10K per week

3) Sales will slowly build as more games are released and the word of mouth phenomenon that happened everywhere else in the world will happen in Korea as well. Right now there are only 8 games available in Korea and I don't think they include SMG, SSBB, MKwii or Wii Fit.

My guess is option 3 will happen. The real question is how many Wii will be sold per week in Korea in a few month. Maybe 20-30K? What do you guys think?

15k a week is that a lot for that county... How many PCs get sold out there.? I heard South Korea is a big PC gaming country...

Wii Code: 4819-7684-2396-4558

Sales are pretty good. I think the population of South Korea is around the population of France 60 million.

Wii will be launched in Taiwan next month

Population of South Korea is 49 milion. Comparing it to Japan with population of 127 million, Japan sells around 50-70K per week. Scaling the Japanese sales down to the population of Korea and you get 19-27K per week. I know console gaming in Korea is new but I'm sure it will catch on like the DS.

I think it'll probably pick up, though not go crazy. Convincing a PC market to go to console will be a long term thing-, especially considering how RTS heavy Korea is--as we all know it's not a genre that ports as well as, say, shooters. Even there you have die hard keyboard and mouse championers. Pikmin 3 will probably help whenever that comes out, but so much of RTSs relyon keyboard shortcuts I think Korea will probably have to open up to other gaming genres in general, which means Nintendo might not be a true force in the region until the 8th gen system comes out. Not to say Wii won't be profitable for them--just that it's more a table setter for things to come than anything else.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

Be happy with like 15k a week.

The DS started slow and then picked up a lot. They sold a million DSs in Korea in less than a year. You also have to remember that Wii will appeal to girls and parents so it will be much more popular than the HD consoles.

I wonder if Wii is supply constrained in Korea?

These are pretty good sales for a country that pretty much exclusively plays Starcraft. My friend is Korean, and when he was Korea, he was the only one of his friends with a Wii. They all had PCs and Starcraft though. It's amazing that they love that game enough that it gets its own channel, and pro players get the chicks.
*Sigh* I wish gamers got the hot girls here too.
