I bought a few packs of Energizer rechargables and it's been working great. Most Energizer chargers come with AA batteries to get you going anyway. I also use them in my digital camera, wireless mouse/keyboard, TV remotes, etc..
You will not regret the investment.
The rEVOLution is not being televised
I use Energizer 2500 NiMH batteries they work great I also got the 15 minutes charger, it works like a charm, I've never been this happy about batteries before ( i have something like 20 batteries and 1 charger in this setup

Hmm, I don't know about Guitar Hero or the Wii Blaster (have neither) but I know it at least works fine with the Wii Wheel.
That's weird that it would affect those since the back doesn't add that much volume to it.

I've got a the similar kinda set-up. I find that the batteries work like a charm on the Wii Motes and dont have to be charged very often. Maybe once a week playing approx. 4 hours every day or two. There is however a problem with the recharables in the wireless sensor bar. They work great for the first few hours but then as the batteries weaken so does the bars ability to read the Wii mote. If your playing games the dont require you to point and use a cursur then the rechargables work pefect. So games like Guitar Hero, Fire Emblem and Mario Galaxy will be fine but games like Metroid Prime, Link's Crossbow and Rayman give me troubles after the first couple hours. Just gotta make sure my batteries are at full juice if planning a sessions with one of those.
I have six rechargeable Duracell batteries. They've been really nice to have when it comes to my room mate's 360 and Wii controllers as well as my digital camera I used for class and also one of those Havoc remote controlled helicopters.
I use this http://www.batteryjunction.com/ch10chsmchwi1.html for rechargeable batteries. It is a smart charger, so it will help prevent overcharging your batteries, which can destroy them. Also, it charges 10 at a time, so you always have enough fresh batteries for 4 controllers. (granted you then need ~20 batteries).
I have to go, so I can't type more, but I highly recommend it, as it has worked wonderful for me, and you can use the batteries in cameras, remotes, wireless sensor bars, and anything else for that matter.
