Forums - Nintendo - My first brief impression of the "Nintendo Channel" – What are yours?

I think maybe he needs an overly blown up condeluted system that has several buttons meaning the same thing.

ie.
Portable Demos
DS Demos
Hand Held Previews & Demos
Palm held gaming portions for your testing purposes

Then everything becomes crystal - maybe it's too core XD?

Either way it's a wicked piece of software and worth my 0 dollars... wait a sec err..

I use to work as a U.I. specialist.  That is not the way I'd lay things out at all.  You read from top left to bottom right and there are sections of the screen which should be used for certain functions.  The more important functions fall within the lines from top left to bottom right.

If you want me to critique all of the issue's with the U.I. on the channel.  I will gladly post the pictures of each of the menus and write about what proper ettiquite is for U.I.'s.  Especially those which are meant to be simplistic for the impatient and technophobic.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

I'd enjoy it.  I think reading a professional opinion on that would be really cool.  ^_^

I'll write it up on the weekend. I'm too worn out from the week right now. I'll PM you when it's up.

Thank you in advance.  I look forward to reading it.  ^_^

Yes, I figured this out on my own but that's not the point.  If I showed that channel to my mom and asked her to find anything in it she'd be lost.  Same with my wife.  So it's fundamentally broken.  It has a horrible layout that makes things harder to do and find then it should.

Well I'll be interesting to see your breakdown later. I don't have any major problem with the actual main menu, but I'd agree with you it's not as well designed as the other channels. Virtual Console's menu seems a lot more friendly with bigger buttons, and a picture of the games and channels next to them.

If you're complaining about how the channel defaults to the video section and not the main menu, then I completely agree that seems ass-backwards. Be like if the News Channels opened with the headline scroll option instead of listing the different news categories.

I'll keep updating this post with the basics of layout design and how it relates to U.I. design. I'll then break down the issue's I have with the layout of the Nintendo Channel.

This is the basics of layout, specifically how it relates to important spots on a TV screen.  Safe tile is the portion of the screen which should not be used as a focal point for objects as old CRT's and even some LCD's will hide that portion of the image from the viewer.

As you can see I've drawn four boxes and criss crossing lines.  The boxes are numbered in regards to their focal importance.  All people, and objects of attention should be layed out so that they cross the lines in the same manner as I've drawn.

The center of the screen is a hot spot and should be used as such.  If you are going to place something where two lines cross, make it count.

This ends part 1 of my tutorial.  I'll update this as I find time over the next few days and relate it back to the Nintendo Channel.

Tip: The number 4 is very important in design.  Exceed 4 and you alienate your audience.  I'll explain the rest of the importance of the number 4 in my next update!

I was on it for about 5 mins tops yesterday. I just looked through the preview section and didn't see anything i liked so i just peaced out. Anything worth actually looking at?!?!

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

I think its a positive feature, but not a vital one. I viewed some videos and looked around here and there. I have an R4 to demo games so the DS demo is nothing special for me. Its just another little pleasing feature the Wii offers.

The layout is lousy but the demos and videos are sweet. Love that I can now see all the VC channel vids right on the Wii.

And Ninja Gaidin DS demo was so good my son went and got the game. Loving it.

I love the demo part...
