I just completed my first boss battle - maxamillion and i have to have that the tank is only useful for cover as for this battle i just hid my lancers behind it for cover.

But I have to say in that episode valkyrie totally kicked my ass, in one turn she took out 2 of my storm troopers and totally killed an engineer i had hiding in a ditch (my first permanent death, not even a chance to recover him! lucky for me nil and largo did a job on the commanders tank!

but have to agree with you all, engineers are useless, but if you do deploy they just hide them behind the tank, so if you need to fix up ur tank their already there!

oh i also did the stealth mission as well, usually i hate missions like this but I quite enjoyed this level!

now to find time to finish off these chapters... damn that bottle of vodka thats calling my name out at the bar in town!!!

If you're talking about the one in chapter 7, I beat that one this morning. Selvaria was a bitch! She took out half of my squad out, but I was able to recover them. The engineers are good for providing ammo when the lancers or snipers run out of ammo.

in terms of "usefullness" for getting high ranks,

Scout, Lancer, Shock Trooper, Support/Sniper in order of greatest to lowest importance.

About half of the mission would really benefit you if you have 1 Support and 1 Sniper.

I just purchased this on Amazon for $50. Can't wait.

I dont understand how can you say the tank (Eidelweiss) is not important.It allows to block enemy fire ,it can take several enemies out each turn if you are close and use the mortar ,its can be repaired each 1-2 turns so it keeps attracting enemy fire and leaves some room for your other characters to progress,and sometimes its the only unit capable of fighting big enemies without dying in one turn.For example in the fight witn Maximilian uber-tank and the posterior appearance of Selvaria the Eidelweiis is absolutely crucial ,to take out the turrets of the sides of the tank ,to shoot into the radiator from far if you dont have any lancer near to jump on the tank ,to block the enemy fire and keep your engineer and some lancers alive ,and finally when Selvaria arrives to keep her at bay and dispose of the extra troops she comes with while you reserve some lancers to take out the last radiator.

I found engineers VERY helpful on the Maximillion fight. They can restock lancer's ammo just by running past them. Plus I don't know how many times they've saved my ass in tank fights, healing the Eidelweiss. I love me some engineers.

Eidelweiss I also find extremely useful in certain contexts. Such at breaking up enemy camps. 3 or four guys hiding behind sandbags? Use a mortar, destroys all of their cover and will either kill all of them or seriously injure them all. Obviously using it to kill 1 guy, or just a light tank is going to be overkill and a waste of AP. But in the right situation it's indispensable.

Every class is extremely useful, you just have to know the context in which to use them.
