How much faster did it reach it than the 2nd fastest console to reach that milestone?

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS2&reg2=All&cons3=DS&reg3=All&weeks=110

About 20 weeks faster than the DS and about 30 weeks faster than the PS2.

Yet this graph says that the PS2 is selling at the same rate as the PS3.

Still, quite a nice accomplishment for the Wii. The thing is a freak of nature.

I hope that was sarcasm. I suspect every moderator here knows the falacy with thsi chart by now. Just in case you don't, the launches are staggered making this chart useless. Do the same compairosn but use individual territories and you'll see what I mean. PS3 up until just 2 months ago was charting almost equal with GC, not PS2.

Thats exactly what Montana was pointing out. Rol used the charts to say the Wii got to 25M 30 weeks before the PS2. But the PS2 launch was staggered, unlike the Wii which was released in the big three regions all within a month.

It is difficult to tell which reached 25M first between the Wii and PS2.

No it's not.  Even when you compare individually the Wii outsells the PS2 in all 3 categories.

The Wii reached 25 million first no matter which way you use.

Congratulations Wii and Nintendo.

There was a time when people doubted the Wii would ever catch up to the 360 in North America. Now it's just around the corner. Also I still think the Wii will hit 30 million before the 360 hits 20 million. Anytakers? I'll take a one month ban bet with anyone.

Ban Bets aren't allowed anymore.

Using a regional only comparison is simply a way to give the PS2 a leg up. Both consoles had supply issues, changing it to a regional comparison is simply a way to skew things.

I'm pretty sure once again that someone is going to miss this but comparisons used to predict the future are different than comparisons used to evaluate the past. When predicting the future the alignments matter because you're trying to account for future fluctuations/changes. When evaluating the past they don't matter because those offsets are the way things were, since nothing will change them no possible changes need to be accounted for.

The best analogy I can think of is this(If you read nothing else read this part):

If two sports teams (Teams A & B) are going to play one another and two sportscasters are debating which team will do better because each of the teams played a very tough opponent(Team C) earlier in the year you might hear them say some of the following:

SC1: "Well Team C was a great team, very high scoring they hit 25 points very fast, but astonishingly Team B got their in even fewer games."

SC2: "Yeah well you should consider that Team C had tougher field conditions back then because the grounds crew wasn't prepared for that huge rush of people in the first 3 or 4 games and it set them back as they struggled early in the season."

SC1: "Well good teams find a way to score regardless of conditions and the grounds crew is part of their organization, Team B also experienced huge unexpected numbers of people early in the season, even more than Team C, and their grounds crew handled it well. I hardly think you should penalize them for that."

Similarly if we use the same situation:

SC2: "Well moving on to Team A, they actually scored as many points in the first 3 or 4 games of the season as Team C did and if you look at what Team C did in the later part of the Season I think Team A could really surprise people!"

SC1: "I don't know about that, you just pointed out that Team C struggled during the first 3-4 weeks because of their field conditions, if those conditions are better then they should play better and it would stand to reason that Team A without those early problems would not see that increase."

If it helps Team A = PS3, Team B = Wii, and Team C = PS2.

I just did a quick calculation and that's actually going to be really close.

Anyone still doubt that it will sell 100 million.

Yes, because of lifespan. But these sales are astronomical! It has had another 400k week in NA this year too, right?

Anyone want to guess when the Wii will reach 30 million.

Life span?

Oh yes...the last bastion of hope for the HD console apologists.
