Forums - Gaming - Why I am not that excited with the Wii and Wii Fit sales

Here it is straight and simple:

Casual games will be more common on the Wii due to the demographic.
The Wii will get more and more core games as time goes on and in fact should equal the amount on The PS2 or a little less due to a later start in the console race by 3rd parties.
4 of the top 5 selling console games in the PS1 era were on the N64 but more software was sold for the PS1.
The top rated games were on the N64 but the PS1 had more highly ranked games and the most shovelware.
More games are being delayed this gen longer than ever. FF XIII KZ 2 MGS IV and so on this is in part to the slower HD sales and also the increased development costs and overall complexities of high def graphics however the PS3 and 360 should see higher quality games because of this.

Next gen should be interesting

I'll say it again, there is just no pleasing everyone.

If Nintendo implements stricter quality control, there will be endless whining about how Nintendo is turning into the old Nintendo and is trying to control everything.

And that will ruin the industry.

If Nintendo does nothing, there will be endless whining about how low quality software is flooding the market.

And that will ruin the industry.

Nintendo did attempt to enforce stricter quality control at the start of the N64 era and look what happened to them. Third parties just went elsewhere. There are always going to be companies looking to make a quick buck and they will exploit the most popular machine to do so.

Well... there was more than one problem with the N64.

The choice to maintain the cartridge format in particular seems to ring a bell, even ten years later. Developers were not keen on that decision seeing as how they had to cover the costs to produce them before a single unit was sold. Space was the other issue, directly correlated to the cart format. Or rather that lack of it unless publishers wanted to pay a higher publishing premium to cover the additional expense.

Cheaper optical media along with the additional freedom of storage space it offered seemed the natural state of progression for the industry, but Nintendo went a different direction, largely as a control issue against piracy. For that generation, the decision did not pay off.

I don't personally think quality control (as in Nintendo being overly draconic about enforcing it) was an issue at all, seeing as how several of the N64 carts I purchased after much anticipation, turned out to be extremely mediocre titles (Castlevania rings a bell).

But yes, developers will always look to dump their quick, mediocre efforts on the platform with the largest user base. That's just the basic economics of the industry.

Isn't this like saying
I wish they'd stop making romance movies.. they are reducing the number of action movies people could be writing!

I really have to wonder what people this is the actual percentage of "WiiFitties" among Wii owners.

What's the current attach rate in Japan? I don't feel like crunching the numbers although it should be interesting to see how they compare with the US numbers. Until we have some figures to work with, not too much point in second guessing. Amazon has stopped taking pre-sell orders currently (listed as "sold out"), if that's any indicator.

I ordered two copies for myself and I'm not even singing in the Nintendo choir. I do hope there will be future games from Nintendo that use the balance board which will give us foot/hand controlled games beyond DDR Wii edition.

If not, it was an interesting idea at least. Maybe more Wii Yoga would help me feel better about it.

This could be the diet of the year.
Wii + Wii Sport game = greatest video game idea of the year.

The same people who don't use their gym memberships are likely to be the same people who stop using Wii Fit after a couple months or less if it doesn't produce magic results or they no longer find it entertaining.

Not that it matters to Nintendo, seeing as how the purchase has already been made. Even if people only used it for one week, it's all the same to them so long as it continues to sell.

VGChartz lists the Japan Wii attach rate at 3.39 compared to 6.02 in the US and 4.08 in Other...

The Japanese market is really slowly dying...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I just got Wii Fit this morning!

Unfortunately I have to go to college this afternoon, but I will play it tonight!

I don't understand why people are against games like Wii Fit. I think it's really innovative how the gaming market is extended with new control methods. The wiimote and nunchuck brought the best controls yet to gaming, so the balance board is just another gift from heaven :p

Wii fit won't be a substitute for AAA games though.

I still love my xbox360 too!

Currently Playing:

Wii: Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort

Xbox360: Fifa 2009, Halflife 2 Episode 2

Want to play:
Wii: Lego Indiana Jones, SMG2
Xbox360: MW2

I think the Wii is doing wonderfull and Wii Fit is going to be a great success and help increase the gaming market nicely.

Sadly as a gamer I don't see that as something that will really benefit me in the future because I see a significant percentage of those new people coming through gaming via the Wii don't really share my gaming tastes.

Maybe I am wrong but if Wii Fit is that successfull I believe quite a few developers will be tempted to work more on Wii Fit clones than on the kind of games I enjoy as a gamer ( AC, Uncharted, GTA4,...).

I believe the situation will improve in a few years when the Wii game market gets saturated but in the meanwhile the Wii success is not pushing developers to start mega productions that could end up being tomorrow's franchise...

developers won't pull mega production out of their asses. it takes some time to make those games and wii will see them in the near future(some will be announced on e3 2008). if wii could handle the same graphics like x360 you would have the same multiplatform games you have on ps360.

I was actually curious about the attach rate specifically for Wii Fit to be used in comparison to US sales. But since you figured the overall attach rate of Japan compared to the US, it will be interesting to see how Wii Fit attach rates will be.

Will it be similar (higher attach ratio in the US, meaning most successful out of all WW sales regions) or less than the typical US attach rate for a high profile title? Somehow I just can't see the same audience for SSBB and MK going for Wii Fit, particularly the younger demographic. It will appeal to a largely different demographic (older users, with a broader range), which should directly translate to more console sales, not that Nintendo has been able to keep up with US demand even without soft related boosts.

Based upon NTDOY trading, which can't seem to keep above $70 before investors start taking profits, it doesn't seem as though they believe the title will sell significantly more than projected. We'll see what happens to the stock later this month, following the US release.
