Except one dev ragged on SMG and another said they don't have the resources to make a PS3 version, quite different things.

Really? The aiming is absolutely horrible, at least from the games I've played. I have noticed that current FPS games that also tailored to consoles make the crosshair bigger to compensate for that which screws up the PC version. From my point of view anyways. |
Not to mention console versions are severely casualified (yes, I invented a word, and now it is law). UT3 on consoles is more than 30% slower than its PC version. CoD4 has some ridiculous auto-lock thing to make it so a toddler can win. It also only allows like 16 man servers (vs. 50 man on PC). Team Fortress 2 has 16 man servers (vs. 32 man on PC). RTS games reduce the interface to almost nothing but quick-keys and still play like crap.
None of this is taking into account the grossly inferior (and expensive) online systems, the cost of DLC, the higher cost of the game, and the lack of mods and user-content. As for adventure games, just buy a 360 controller. That's what I did. I just plug it in and off I go. Multiplats just shouldn't be played on consoles when you have an option IMO.

On that point I agree Valve is kind of screwing you guys, but I also see where/why their coming from. Its time and resources to build or even port a game particularly to a platform that is so fundamentally different from what their developers are used to. If anyone doubts that they could develop for PS3 you can keep on lying to yourself, the issue is purely financial as it always is for every developer since the beginning of time. Limited money, limited time, and limited staff, etc.. is the problem not "teh powah of teh c3ll". Valve is a great company and they take care of their customers but they do it because it is part of their business model not just because Gabe is a jovial guy (although thats probably why they chose this strategy to begin with). As soon as taking care of customers stops being a good strategy for business they will have to change their strategy, and I hope that day never comes. |

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia. Thanks WordsofWisdom!
You have to consider that Valve are actually quite small compared to the big dogs, and I can see why they're reluctant to spend time developing for the most tricky console which also happens to have an unimpressive install base.
Everybody don't go bashing Valve now,i mean if a developer isn't comfortable developing a game for a certain system then he they should not be forced to and probably wont be.
This proves that Microsoft gained something by making it easy to port games between the PC and the 360. Valve would probably not care about the 360 if it wasn't the case.
Sony already used non-conventional architectures twice (PS2 and PS3). The first time it worked well, not because developers liked it but because the PS2 dominated so much that there was no choice but learn the ugliness of the Emotion Engine. This time, many developers clearly don't feel as forced to learn Sony's new novelty, since the PS3 isn't nearly as successful as the PS2 was.
I think the PS4 will use a more conventional architecture.
PS: Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the Cell in itself. It's a great choice for many programming tasks, just not the best for games (at least in its current form, with only one PPE instead of 2 or 3 as Sony had originally planned).

Heh, bashing Valve is a good way to immediately piss off 4-5 of the mods on this site. Honestly, Valve is one of those developers like Team ICO. They're just not a company you can find ways to bash without coming off as a jackass.

Yes.
If you haven't figured it out by now people about half the mods on this site are PC gamers first. I like to think it gives us a slightly more nuetral perspective on the consoles themselves. Valve and Blizzard bashers shall be destroyed! (I won't really ban you for having an opinion. It's a joke.)

Don't see why everyone is riled about this (well not everyone, but some people).
Don't Insomniac focus on one platform?
Valve = PC really. They are masters of FPS and usually very good at spotting and hiring talent or nurturing great mods (Portal, Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, etc).
They've dissed all consoles including the 360 so its not like they are fans of some consoles vs others - they just don't really like them period from what I read.
However, given the purchasing demographic of 360 and how (it seems) relatively easy a port is I can understand them grabbing that extra cake. PS3 would indeed take much more effort so its a fair choice on their part not to stretch themselves in that direction.
If you want this game you should really get it on PC. If not, and EA port it, then I'm sure it'll be decent on PS3 - I played some Orange Box on PS3 and it really wasn't that bad and you've got to assume EA would do better job with this game now they've got one Source port under their belts already.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
