The next Nintendo console will probably have the power of two Wii's duck taped together.
Let's see Game Cube had the power of two N64's duck taped together. The Wii has the power of two Game Cube's duck taped together.

Neos seriously man. Get a life. We are allowed to have an opinion.
I agree with the original post, that is likely to happen
Out of curiousity Soriku, do you see a N64/PS3 effect occuring the generation after??
Your post makes sense but your title does not, i realize you are prob. too young to remember the awesomeness that was Snes that even the Wii won't top so maybe the next one will top it but doubtful.
"remember the awesomeness that was Snes that even the Wii won't top so maybe the next one will top it but doubtful."
Heh, as far as I´m concerned, no system will ever top the SNES in the 'awesomeness category'.
And I think Soriku hadn´t even 'graced' the world with his presence back then.

No, seriously, he's right. You're allowed to have an opinion but you're not allowed to post flame bait. You're already on very thin ice and have been for a while so please try to think before pressing that little post button.

The SNES was the last console I considered to be the best of breed for its generation, partly because of the hardware, but mostly because of the 3rd party games. Barring Link to the Past, all of my favorites on that system were third party.
Okay, I'll admit I killed many hours playing Star Fox, but in retrospect, it was mainly because I thought the FX chip was the Greatest Thing Ever to happen to consoles at the time. But for console hardware where scaled and rotated bit mapped graphics (Mode 7!!!) was considered "cutting edge," it was pretty cool.
Since the N64, the vast majority of games really worth owning a Nintendo console for have been Nintendo franchises. Until that changes, Nintendo will never be my personal favorite again no matter how many consoles they sell. Zelda and Metroid are the only first party IPs I still play.
But I will always have fond memories of the SNES. Well, not just memories. Hell, I still have mine and all my game carts.
Speculating on the follow-up to the Wii is just pure folly at this point. Hell, even a year an a half before the Wii came out, speculating on the GameCube follow-up was folly--and no one expected what we saw when the Wii and Wiimote were finally revealed.
The only things that may be guarantees are that the follow-up will have a harddrive in it, will be HD compatible, and will be several times more powerful. Nintendo is feeling the heat and taking in the complaints that the Wii is too weak compared to the current trends and that the lack of high-def and a harddrive are pissing off a lot of people.
I highly doubt, given Nintendo's history, that it will use Blu-Ray. Nor do I think the follow-up to the X360 will use Blu-Ray. Hell, the PS4 might not even use it. The Wii doesn't even use DVD's, it uses a DVD-like technology developed by Matsushita so that Nintendo doesn't have to pay DVD royalties. That's part of the reason the Wii isn't a DVD movie player, on top of which, who really wants a Nintendo system to play movies? I already own at least 3 different DVD players, I don't need the next Nintendo system to play movies. No one does. New storage formats are constantly being developed and researched, so Nintendo will, if their current status holds, use a new disk-based technology developed by Matsushita that can hold several gigs more memory than a regular DVD. Perhaps even more than an HD-DVD disk or Blu-Ray disk. Who knows?
Aside from these things, there's no telling what the Wii2 might actually be like. A smoother, bigger, vastly more powerful Wii? Hell, I'd like that. And add a couple buttons to the Wiimote to make it more versatile. Put stronger rumble features in the Wiimote and add them to the Nunchuck, make them both wireless with rechargable batteries.
Going by general video game history, all three (or more) next-gen consoles following this generation will likely have motion controls that are vastly improved over this generation, and all will likely be on more even ground when it comes to power and the like. The Wii2 will likely be the cheapest to purchase and develop for because that's the way Nintendo works. All three will be HD and have large harddrives, and most likely all three will have wireless controllers, some sort of optional motion control, and wi-fi. This generation is showing more legs than before, however. The current generation will likely last quite a bit longer than before.

I bet it won't be 1080p. I also wonder if it will come with HDMI output. I guess that it will have what basically is a DVI output coupled with a component output, and that an add-on cable will allow to connect to HDMI or component. I have doubt if component or composite will come as default in the box. It may still be composite. What I mean with the DVI output, is that they won't have HDCP, so they won't output 1080p. Actually, I'm convinced of that. |
HDMI is mostly just DVI+sound in the same cable. And HDCP means HD copy protection and it has absolutely nothing to do with 1080p output. HDCP is used even with 720p transmissions and in newer devices also DVI has HDCP. DVI can output 1080p just as easily and with exactly same quality as HDMI.
