You mean the contest? Nope, it's not possible as far as I know, which is good, because that would mean you have to check that every time. Also, we have an official thread, please use that nexttime.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS
You can block stuff by throwing a shell or a banana when a shell is about to hit you.
You can also keep the 3 banana's or shells active without using them.
For the Mario Circuit: ask TWRoO, he has the fastest VGChartz time at the competition. I have the 2nd time, and I don't have a clue how someone could clock 1:32...
You do need some luck though. If you get hit by lightning it's over. It also helps if your first item is a mushroom.
I presume you mean the MK competition (fastest vs race on Mario Circuit (which is modified))
It depends which pick ups... You cannot block the lightening bolt or the blue shell, so if you get hit by one of them in the race you have no chance of getting under 1:40 (my time is 1:39.200ish) The POW you can decrease it's effect by doing an upward flick at the right time.
Red shells of course can be stopped by simply holding a green shell or banana behind the kart (or a chain of three bananas) so you should always have one held behind you and one in reserve. fake item boxes are useless though, so just drop them)
My tactic is to start fast, and get a draft (slipstream) from the nearest kart which bring me to about 4th/5th before the item boxes, if I can pick up an item in 4th/5th then there is a chance it will be a mushroom or even three, if so then I am in luck and I can then use it/them for a nice shortcut across the grass, the rest is just good racing. (although if you really want a good time you may as well quit if you get blue shelled/lightning, which in this competition isn't too often thankfully (about 1 in 4 races you will be blue shelled/lightning I think)

You start fast? I start out slow, on 12th/11th/10th place, and get a golden mushroom. I use that to go beside the jump, and it lasts long enough to get the 2 normal cut corners, which leads my first round to be around 30-31 seconds. Then I do about 36 seconds for the 2 next laps, and my record is 1:42:3X
As for getting better at solely racing, I recommend using easy level bots with 150CC on the course in VS. You could also learn something by watching the world's number 1.
If you want to abuse a glitch, you could slide and then wheelie on the edge so you're just not at the grass. If you do so, you're unhittable. I haven't done this in a competition, but I reckon Nintendo would have a machine checking for bug abusers (I've seen 2 people online being banned for a week and losing all their points)

thanks for the advice - upon reading some of these tips to the wife her response was just "yeah I know", then why didn't she tell me?
dangling the bananas / shells behind helps a lot, also I just found if you jump when the POW is about to hit they dont miss.
Also managed to lose red shells twice when I was power sliding round the corners, first time that happened so now i'm gonna practice.
Why does this thread seem like it started as a way to stop items and somehow managed to turn into a thread about getting a good time in the online comp and a good hint for stopping items is to try and make them collide with obsticles on the course such as sharp corners (bowser castle type corners) and other things like goombas, cows and penguins.
Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.
dont know - i've been entering the Mii comp channel all of the time and never won. Would guess at points with WiiWare launching WW soon.

I would point a finger at you and laugh, but since last night similar thing happened to me while playing at WFC with my wife; i happened to notice a new thing that i didn't know before and gave that hint to my wife, she said that she knows it already (around 3rd time she played the game, while i have been playing it for weeks everytime i had the chance). She apparently had tried it as soon as she could, which is interesting considering her intellectual capabilities being good mainly in children clothing, chocolate and getting fucked hard (oh, and brain training). @J-Favs: I believe it was the whole point point in the beginning.

@Me. what do you mean you have never won? you mean you haven't come first? because the race is only against computer opponents.
If you mean against the guys with 1:32 etc then no one here has any chance, like I said you should only be trying to beat your friends times or just beating your own times.
@Oyvoyvoyv. If you can get a 31 second first lap then perhaps I should try your way, I usually get a 33-34 second first lap then I just drive as clean as possible to get 32.5-33.0 times for lap 2 and 3. (and if I get hit by a shell/lightning then I just restart)
