Forums - Gaming - Do Next-Gen Games Give Us Next-Gen Gameplay?

You're still off on the frame rate issue. We are having the same frame rates now we've had for the past 2 generations. To claim that they are doing so with more stuff on the screen is irrelevant because you said specifically better frame rates, not more stuff on the screen.

Frame rates will always be a balance between smooth play and everything else. The more you throw at the game, the more it drops in frame rate. We'll be 3 generations from now and still fighting the same frame rate game.

And yes, we still get slowdown this generation...as well as pop up. So long as developers throw at the game more than the game engine can handle, you'll have these two issues.

^Ok, I'm right about everything else I said then.

Godfather, Scarface, MOH, Super Paper Mario, Okami, NMH, Bully, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and more can all take longer to complete (or have great online) than MP3.

okay, since nobody else is answering...

Take away games that were also on other console and scored better on other consoles: God father, scarface, MOH, Okami, Bully, Lego Starwar.

Take away games that doesn't even use motion control: Fire Emblem.

That leave you: NMH.

Pretty good game, but wasn't it aimed to release on 360 before changing it to Wii?

You missed Super Paper Mario.

Which was originally a GC game and doesn't use motion control unless I'm forgetting something...I beat the game, and it's certainly got new gameplay elements.

No current consoles do not provide a next generation game play experience.
BTW: Wii motion control is not innovative. The PC mouse uses motion control. point and click

I hope you're kidding. Seriously, this is one of the most clueless statements I have seen in a while. Comparing the PC Mouse to the Wii-mote is asenine and rediculous. The mouse senses movement in a 2-d space, somewhat similar to an analog thumbstick. The Wii Remote senses movement in a 2-d space (with the IR, similar point & click to the mouse), but it goes much further than that. It senses movement in a 3-d space, angle, g-force, etc, to produce a gaming experience never before available on any platform. This is innovative by every definition of the word. You comparison is not thought out, reasoned in the post, or reflecting reality in any way, and is pure trolling.

Thank you for your opinion. To me there is motion control in PC Mouse. Well thanks for pointing out the difference.

PC Mouse = pointer on Wiimote, not motion control. They are both pointin devices, and a mouse is a lot more accurate right now. The motion control on the Wiimote is the same as the PS3 controller, though.

In general next-gen doesn't give you spectacular gameplay, but there are cases where game-play has improved:

Oblivion

Oblivion offered nothing new over Morrowind, IMO.  There is nothing about Oblivion that is next gen, Morrowind was from the previous gen, but had a larger world, more NPC's, more conversation offerings, more side missions, etc.  So in my opinion Oblivion is a step back in generational content, basically Oblivion is a smaller prettier Morrowind.

Accuracy is just as good on the Wii-mote provided the game alows for calibration.    I can shoot far more accurate on Wii than I can with a mouse and I've been playing PC FPS for a long time.

This again?  I figured Sony fans already had enough of this already.  No, they most certainly not the same.  The Wii-mote is more aware fo where it is in 3D space and can be combined with a second motion sensitive device with the nun-chuck.

I agree the Wii mote is far more then the PS3 controller when it comes to motion sensing, and I agree it's nowhere near the same thing as a mouse.

But I am sorry. In no way, shape, or form, is it more accurate than a mouse. I have a 2560x1600 display, and can hit any discreet pixel on in less than a second with a mouse. There is no way that can be done with a Wii Mote. It does not have the resolution to figure out 2,560 possible horizontal positions. If it did, you could not get it there in a second.

When you can explain how it's not possible for me to move my wrist to aim from one pixel the next in the same time frame as a mouse, I'll listen.

I'll put it this way, I can very quickly shake the Wii-mote cursor from one edge of the screen to the next much faster than I can with a mouse. My mouse must travel almost 4 inches to reach one side of the screen to the other, where as my wrist must bend only a few degrees to the do the same.

@OP: short answer; no. I do have hopes for Dungeon Hero though!

Sorry, that's simply not true.  Accuracy on the Wiimote is good, and certainly better than the PS3 and 360's dual analog for shooting, but it's nowhere near the speed or accuracy of a well-calibrated mouse in the hands of a skilled PC gamer.  I own and play FPS games on both, and although the Wiimote is a lot of fun for it, it's not going to take the crown from the PC anytime soon.

That said, trying to play FPS games with analogs makes me want to bash my head in.  It's a frustratingly primitive and horrible control scheme, and I'll never understand how people even tolerate it much less enjoy it.
