It's a win-win deal for both companies, certainly Sony could be buying the GTA4s for the bundles at a higher price than what it's sold alone. But it's doubtful they made any kind of "pay-off" for this. I'm sure if MS could have/ wanted to, they would have done it. I don't know how these companies manage their finances, maybe MS considered they had put enough money in *R hands already, maybe they thought it was not a good deal for them considering they already cut 360's price in EU. No matter how you look at it, the software company providing the game for the bundle is always the big winner, 'cause they already made their money even if the bundles don't sell! |
Exactly. And I'll point out that when the MGS4 bundle was announced, it was said that Sony must have done it as a favor/contractual obligation to Konomi/Kojima, but now people seem to think that Sony had to pay Rockstar to be able to bundle the game. So it goes both ways against Sony, apparently.
But it's not likely that Sony is paying Rockstar. Sony bundled MGS4 to move PS3s, and Konami would be happy for the extra exposure and possible extra sales. Same with GTAIV. The publisher/developer must still be paid for the one copy of the game bundled with each console, and if Sony is giving some kind of savings with the bundle, Sony eats that money in return for moving the console, instead of getting a full $10 or whatever they'd normally get from a 3rd party PS3 sale. But Sony wouldn't have to pay add'l to have the right to bundle.
