Forums - Sales - MS: 360 version of GTA4 outselling PS3 version 2-1

A fairer comparison is DMC4. Sony fans are right about one thing, and that is the fact that brand association plays a part. It is easy to look at it another way. Last generation the Sony platform had 90%+ of GTA sales, and bore 90%+ of the hardware boost associated with GTA sales.

What do you think that ratio will be this generation?

It is funny how people's predictions change...

lol - In this thread, I predicted the 360 version would outsell the the PS3 version by 1.99:1 or better... So it looks like MS is tell me that I was .01 off in my prediction.

But the US Console ratio advantage for the 360 is more than double, and actually 11.6 million 360s to only 4.73 PS3s.
(That is a 2.5:1 ratio)

So, isn't Microsoft admitting that the game is selling "better" to PS3 owners than to 360 owners?  What is the reason that the sales ratio of GTAIV games doesn't match the console ratio exactly? Why does it favor the PS3 here?

Shouldn't the downloadable content pushed the 360 into the advantage to have a better attach ratio?

Did anyone think that the 4.6 million PS3 customers would buy the same amount (or more) GTAIV copies that the 11.6 million 360 cutomers would buy?

When I made my prediction of a 2:1 MS sales advantage, I thought it was pretty clear that it meant that the PS3 was outperforming the 360.  Judging on raw sales to vastly different sized install bases is all well and good... But I'm surprised people are thinking this is good for MS... This seems like a pretty negative trend.

  • CoD4 sold better (US) on the 360 by something like a 2.83 : 1 advantage.
  • Madden 08 2.82 : 1
  • Guitar Hero 2.82: 1
  • Skate 2.97 : 1

Those are all BETTER than the 2.5:1 360 console advantage...  GTAIV did worse on the 360 compared to thier console advantage.

MS's 50 million doesn't appear to be paying off... yet, at least.

Uh the most recent game that has been released multiplat in US is DMC4 and the user base was 1.66:1 you might want to consider that. also are you saying you believe microsoft here? they are saying their business partners told them its selling better? I stoped reading after the first line because of all the bullshit in it.

I am taking MS at their word, yes... But I'd imagine they're being "optimistic". They have better data than we do, for sure... But I don't think their going to dig themselves into a whole by blatantly lying.

And you are right about DMC4... That is probably even more of a PlayStation targeted product than the GTA franchise. It is also uniquely popular in Japan compared to other games.

CoD4 as an FPS is likely to appeal more to 360 users... Madden 08 was better on the 360 and sold better.  Assassin's Creed  tracked pretty much identical to the console install bases (with possibly a slight PS3 advantage).

My only point is that all things *SHOULD* be equal... When the numbers stray from the console ratio, you have to start asking "why?"...

We've all discussed those "why" questions.
  • Episodic Content?
  • Started franchise out on PlayStation brand
  • Xbox Live advantages
  • PSN is free
  • Reviews opinions on minute graphics differences
  • Haven't bought a console yet and will pick a new one NOW based on this game mixed with console feature/value associations

There's no doubt it would have been 100% better for Sony if GTAIV remained fully exclusive (or timed exclusive). But we all know that Rockstar and Take 2 decided a long time ago not to take 18.5 million potential customers off the table.

This is clearly an opportunity being taken by Microsoft to get "good press" because they know that on the surface, people 2:1 sales and don't take into account install bases. If I were Microsoft, I'd point this out too! But I wouldn't be very happy about those numbers behind close doors... "What about our $50 million?!?? ;)

That was neither subtle nor trolling.

How many non PS2 owners do you think will buy a PS3 this month?

Furthermore, how many PS2 owners do you think will buy a Wii or 360 or even a Wii60 this month?

The logic proves nothing. All Sony needs is for the PS2 owners to buy PS3...any non-PS2 owners will just be gravy.

How many PS2 owners will buy a 360 rather than a PS3 for GTAIV? How many are fucking crazy? When PS3 has Blu-Ray? Quieter/cooler/free online gameplay/Home? All that life ahead of the PS3 with the big guns still coming, including all the series fans know and love from PS2 on PS3, while 360 seems to be running short of steam? My god, any PS2 owners that buy 360 for GTAIV and its inferior (yet expandable for $20, ooh) experience....must just be poor.

I am a PS2 owner that just bought a 360 four days ago.  There were several reasons for my decision, none of which involve me being poor.  I assure you, I make plenty of money.

1. Including Xbox Live Arcade, the 360 has more games I want.
2. When I want a Blu-Ray player, I will buy one.
3. Xbox Live is a fantastic way to play games online, and is well worth the $50/year.

Also...I find it interesting that you present "free online gameplay" as a reason to buy PS3, then go on to say someone "must just be poor" if they choose a 360 over a PS3.  Doesn't make much sense to me.

mr. starcraft, can u tell is there any good sides/advantage/good news on the ps3 comparing to the xbox360 at all?

n is there any little tiny part of 360 is inferior to ps3, according to ur opinion.

im just curious abt ur thoughts, thats all, hope u dont mind to tell me :) coz i'd been reading some of your posts, and 360 always win no matter how good is the ps3's situation.

Either way, I already predicted atleast 2:1 GTA4 sales in the US favoring Microsoft, anything less would be pretty embarrassing considering the advantage MS has over Sony right now.

I think 2:1 in MS' favor is "better than expected", although not too far off of expectations. MS may very well have been planning on touting a 2:1 number, because they could surely find some retail partners (Best Buy, for example) where 2-1 was almost certain. Microsoft coming out and saying, "hey, we're crushing the PS3 for GTA4 in America" makes them look like a winner, and that gives the 360 some positive perception among people who may not know better and will never follow up on this to see what the final sales numbers look like.

So considering having a cheaper console, a superior online service, exclusive DLC, more advertisements, and a 2.5/1 install base advantage only leads to 2:1 being "better than expected"?? that doesn't make too much sense ESPECIALLY if the PS3 is "primarily being bought as a BluRay player" as some people would sugest.

GTA for the Playstation is akin to Halo for the 360. As posted above, why do you think DMC4 had a ratio of only 1.66 in favor of the 360? Console loyalty is huge. There's millions of people out there that haven't purchased a new console since their PS2. I imagine with this new GTA, the killer app for the PS3, a lot of PS2 owners are upgrading to the PS3.

There should also be a slight bump for 360 GTA4 once the DLC arrives in August.

Hi there.

A 60/40 split and a 66.6/33.3 (2:1) split are actually quite close as far as estimates go. I'm sure as data comes in over the rest of the week from other sources we'll get a better idea of how things are going to shape up in first month sales.

There is one major flaw in this argument. Halo 3 was a "killer app" for the 360 because it was an exclusive title.

On the other hand, GTA IV is not exclusive to PS3.

Many people have held out on buying a new console because they are too expensive.  That being said, do you really think they'll opt for a more expensive console to play a game that it not exclusive to either?  If cost is an issue, they'll probably go for the 360.

No wonder the X360 version is outselling the PS3's by 2:1. People want the DLC.
