Are you kidding? They know pretty much immediately. They're the group that won't keep playing a game despite its flaws in the hopes of it having "a good story" or anything else. They're the ones that will say it's boring and stop playing it. Having personally watched an 8 year old, 5 year old, and 4 year old's reactions to games ranging from Cars to EA Sports Playground to Super Mario Galaxy to Brawl, I can tell you that children are not dumb. Cars was played for one night, beaten, and put on a shelf to rest. Brawl they play on an almost daily basis. Children can tell when a game is fun and when it isn't. |
Who says that the fun of a game is reflected in their average review score?
My Niece and Nephews love games like Carnival Games, Mario Party, and Mario and Sonic at the olympics even though their review scores are less than impressive.

Erm what? None of my posts have even mentioned reviewers or review scores. What are you talking about?

The problem is that this has the effect of making consumers unhappy with their purchases or, even worse, giving uneducated consumers the opinion that ALL Wii games are shovelware. |
You got it backwards. Those "uneducated consumers" don't even know what shovelware is (as the uneducated part should tell you). It's the hardcore gamers that know shovelware, but they ALSO know to stay away from it. I have about 30 PS2 games, and about 20 GC games, all quality titles, or at least titles that appealed to me.
The system I most remember for shovelware is the Gameboy Color, followed by the GBA. And selling 50 million systems in three years, and 75 million in 5, shows that all that shovelware didn't turn the fans from the systems. They bought the games they liked.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Next time you run into a post you disagree with, continue reading. I just had this discussion with Happy Squirrel. Read the above and then respond.
The system that is the most popular always gets the most bad gasmes because they can move on that system. PS3 has the least games so that is the reason for those ratios.

I did read, but I was addressing that point another way.

you can make numbers say anthing you want i took that chart and can prove even with its libary going the way it is you can game for almost 2 hours a day on teh wii for seven years
|
here i dont feel like typeing it all out again, copy paste

okay you guys will love this...i crunched some numbers and came up with a nice ratio.......it looks to me that the wii is going along the same path as teh ps2, lower tech specs but funner, getting lots of shovel ware but still a gem or two.....
if you compare where the wii is now 32/190 game (75% or better in rate)
and apply that to x amount of games to a final library of 1547 (total number of games for the ps2 to date)
and you end up with 260 some odd games.......

okay now break that down to number of game per year....lets say about 7 years...you get 30 some games a year....or around 3 games a month......
now a good game to me is around 10-12 hours at least so lets take that times the number of games per year.....you will get about 407 hours of play with the wii if not longer b/c of extra content and online play......so we will say an even 500
now break that down by play time a day and you will average around an 1.5 hours a day

(moral of the story) you can make numbers say about anything you want them to espicaly if you if you start out with a point you want to reach and add in some flashy pic and a graph or two...its not hard

You didn't read the linked to article did you?
Their determination of what is a good/bad game is dependant on the average review score of the games ...
There are some games which are seen as bad or "Shovelware" due to their low budget and low average review score which are actually fun (in particular fun to a child). A concept that may seem foreign to a lot of people on this site is that many people still really enjoy games like PacMan even though (by today's standards) it is an amazingly low budget game that would (probably) receive a really low average score today.

Then let me reiterate. People can tell when a game isn't fun. They may not know that there's a name for those kinds of games (shovelware), but when they can go to the store and begin buying from a selection that is 60-70% shovelware compared to good games... their opinion can get determined pretty fast.
