Forums - Gaming - On third party hostility against Nintendo

Welcome to VGCharts Kenny and I agree with most of your post - what I love about the Wii is that Nintendo may have predicted and combatted the third parties lack of effort with the Wiiware channel.

The developer of lost winds already said in a video interview that he loves it because you normally have to submit a video to a publisher and sell the idea to them then they move the goalposts and have their input and that takes budget and time. He then went on to say that even on PSN and XBL you have to submit a demo and get MS / Sony's approval so it's very similar but with Wiiware it's just more run with the idea and release it.

This is genious from Nintendo's behalf and their little white box is becoming very open when you also consider Majestico have just announced they have found a way of using the Wii's system id to bypass friend codes, BBC are apparantly looking to have a permanent iplayer channel on the Wii and new Wii engines and dev tools are being made.

The Wii will make several other companies a lot of money and raise their profile no matter how little the Epics and Ubisofts support the Wii.

Interesting read.

I agree that eventually someone (other than Nintendo) is going to try and tap different genre markets (besides mini-games), and someone is going to hit it big. Games like Red Steel, which is a mediocre game at best, had decent sales, just showing there is demand for a FPS-ish/sword fighting game. The Force Unleashed might satisfy this crowd.

SE has already had a lot success with the DS (multiple million sellers btw) and they have some Wii games coming out as well.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

I think you all make great points and I agree with a lot of what has already been said. I think that there also could still be some bad taste in some 3rd parties mouths from when Nintendo was so dominant during the NES and SNES days and really put the screws on 3rd party developers in terms of royalty fees and the such. Maybe that doesn't account for what we are seeing today but it could be some factor still.

Se the comment about WiiWare. That was a long time ago, and any developer now would just be grasping to use that as an excuse (just as bashers are grasping for using it). Nintendo has changed since then. They now obviously ask little of developers, in order to foster an an environment of creativity.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

so a lot of people are saying that the Wii isn't getting third party games because developers haven't had enough time to develop games for the Wii, since they thought the system was going to be a flop. But its obvious the system isn't a flop and yet I still see multiplatform games coming every which way but the Wii. The Wii is established now, so more third party support...right? That doesn't explain why just recently the new Prince of Persia was announced for PS3,360,PC, and even a DS version, but no Wii version. Call of Duty 4: PS3,360,PC,DS. Hell even Assassins Creed got a DS version. I understand that the DS is easier to develop for and is quicker, but at this point its unacceptable that we aren't getting the high class sequels like Prince of Persia; I mean they took the time to port over GC Prince of Persia, and not only did they add on controls...but what else! That's right they removed the blood and made it a T rated game. No Excuse

welcome to vgchartz.

wii ftw? :)

Oh...also, I'm tired of 3rd party developers stripping games or just making it a PS2 game for multiplatform. I mean yes obviously the Wii games can't be identical to its 360 and PS3 counterparts. But there is one game I have a big problem with coming out for the Wii, Rock Band. We are getting a stripped down version with no online mode and its also missing other content from the 360 and PS3 version. The no online is inexcusable. I can understand why there's no DLC, which I don't even care to have to begin with; personally I think that DLC is a waste of money --- it's $1.99 a song for most songs, the game disc comes with 58 songs for $60 (PS3, 360) so that's really about a dollar a song, assuming that the entire game is just songs and doesn't have any graphic ability at all. I would rather just have a new disc every year just like GH has done. But that's just me

Thanks to all for the warm welcome :) Now, in response to some of the prevailing viewpoints: Yes, I agree that Nintendo's success pretty much blindsided everybody, myself included. Never in my most delusional dreams had I predicted they would actually return to the lead as they have. However, if anybody's been watching the game announcements of late, third parties are clearly still not willing to take the Wii seriously. For instance, there are still a huge number of games which are announced for the PS3 and XBox 360, to the notable exclusion of the Wii. The most recent of these is Ubisoft's newest iteration of the Prince of Persia series: Despite Ubisoft's initial support, they have still not seen fit as of this week to include the Wii in the release plans for one of their bigger franchises. Not only that, but the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed was also handed over to an auxillary development team (a reasonably good one from what I understand, but still not the main team). For an example a little more prominent, the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (along with the PS2 and PSP versions) was handed off to Krome Studios, a second-rate developer responsible for games like Barbie Sparkling Ice Show and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. In that, I don't believe I am exaggerating the unwillingness of third parties to support the Wii. Yes, AAA games take a few years to create, but shouldn't developers have noticed the Wii's runaway momentum by the middle of last year, when it overtook the 360 worldwide? And if they did, why haven't any announcements for major games centred on the Wii yet?

The second major sentiment I have noted concerns the notion that a lower barrier is a good thing. I had forgotten about just how badly even the major devs are hurting these days ($100 million!? This is madness!), but I need a little more time to hash out my thoughts on the matter.

Those games you just named were games being developed before all consoles were launched.

About the PoP, well they may have chosen to go that way and give Wii another game, we shall see what this years E3 delivers.
