Forums - Sales Discussion - GTA IV smashes UK day one sales record: 609k (360: 335k PS3 274k)

@Kamil: I checked that shipment number and found out it is from an analyst and not Take Two themselves, so forget that number. The 300M versus 170M is probably 1 day versus 7 days, so it is indeed a week sales, but it is covered in more that 1 week of tracking sales. I do seem to have mixed up some of the Halo numbers in my head, so it is probably more like 2.5M first day and 1.5M for the rest of the week to get to around 4M in sales. But whatever percentage we use, it all depends on what is used as the first day number. So basically with the numbers released by The Source we should see at least around 5M copies of GTA IV sold first week and potentially millions more, but the margin of error is still huge and any prediction is still based on many uncertainties.

Retail Hails Record Breaking GTA IV

Gian Luzio, Play.com’s head of games, says Grand Theft Auto IV has become the online store’s fastest selling game ever, while specialist retailer Game has labeled the title’s launch “phenomenal”.

“GTA IV is the fastest selling game ever on Play.com and has broken the record previously held by GTA San Andreas,” Luzio told Next-Gen on Thursday.

He said that sales had been “neck and neck” between the Xbox 360 and PS3
versions of the game building up to release, but that in the last couple of days the 360 version had been “creeping ahead in daily sales”. He did add that “the PS3 GTA IV hardware bundle sold out within 24 hours.”

Both versions of the title are temporarily out of stock, but Luzio said that customers shouldn’t have too long to wait before they can pick up a copy.

“We are receiving regular shipments from Take-Two and they have handled the biggest game release admirably. Congratulations to all of them for doing such a great job in difficult circumstances (enough groveling, give me more stock!)”

While business has been booming in recent weeks for UK videogame retailers, with the likes of Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and now GTA IV bringing in the pounds, Luzio said that the latter half of the year may yet prove to be even more rewarding.

“The platform holders have done a fantastic job in promoting gaming this year and I believe we are going to have an outstanding Christmas 2008 with games like Call of Duty 5, MotorStorm 2 and Gears of War 2 to name a few.”

A spokesperson for UK-based Game, which opened 260 stores nationwide at midnight on Tuesday to accommodate demand for the game, told Next-Gen that it was finalizing new stock delivery details with Take-Two after virtually selling out of the title. “It’s ]been a phenomenal launch,” he said, but was unwilling to go into sales statistics.

On Wednesday ChartTrack revealed that GTA IV had broken UK opening day sales records after shifting 609,000 copies in its first 24 hours of availability. According to the sales monitor’s estimates, the Xbox 360 version sold 335,000 copies on Tuesday, compared to 274,000 PS3 copies.

Seems that Take Two have been restocking the UK, but they haven't met demand. Still sold out most places. Sony need to restock that PS3 bundle too.

UK retail prepares for 'manic' GTA weekend

Trade says more units arriving today and tomorrow – but doesn't expect them to last long.

Leading UK retailers have told MCV that extra GTA IV stock is being hurriedly pushed into stores in order to cope with the ‘manic’ demand expected this weekend.

However, the channel has admitted that the title is still expected to sell out on PS3 and 360 by Saturday lunchtime.

Head of trading for entertainment at PC world Rene Wright told MCV: "I am pleased to say that all PC World stores will have significant replenishment stocks of GTA on PS3 and Xbox 360 this weekend.

“However, as everyone is doubtless aware, the huge demand in the market means that this stock will sell out quickly, and we will then once again be gearing up to distribute the next delivery of this inimitable product to our stores."

Asda games buyer Andy McFie added: “We are expecting a small amount of GTA stock in-store tomorrow. But the expectation is that this will sell out within a couple of hours of hitting the salesfloor.”

And a spokesperson for HMV commented:

“I understand we've had more stock yesterday, and are expecting more in today for the weekend - so it should be another manic few days, especially with all the press advertising and in-store graphics currently running - which help to keep fuelling demand.”

GTA sales in the UK smashed previous records after its first day on sales on Tuesday, hitting 609,000 units according to retail monitor ChartTrack.

Looks like first week sales will equal first week shipments in the UK.

Retail set for £100m GTA boost

Forget the credit crunch - GTA IV and Wii Fit are set to combine for record week of retail sales

Financial doom and gloom may be building elsewhere, but the games industry is bucking all the trends as Wii Fit and GTA IV look set to push retail sales up to the £100m mark this week.

In the past week, ChartTrack confirmed that Wii Fit has already racked up £16m in sales. And MCV understands that over a million copies of GTA IV have been shipped into UK retail this week – and as fans of Rockstar’s gangster series snap up next-gen consoles, industry sources suggest that the combined hardware and software sales boost from Wii Fit and GTA IV could reach £100m.

“Wii Fit has done very well. I can’t think of a similar week that’s matched this – it’s pretty incredible,” ChartTrack’s Chris Poole told MCV. “If history’s anything to go by, it all depends on GTA – that’s going to be the main reason for hardware sales increases.

The week before San Andreas’ release in 2004, the market stood at £20.8m. The week after, it was £43.3m. It more than doubled, and it looks likely to happen again.”

The retail community has understandably come out to praise the two titles.

“With two ground-breaking titles being released in the space of a few days, the games industry has never been so healthy,” said Zavvi’s Stephen Lynn.

PC World’s Rene Wright added: “The broadened appeal of two huge products such as GTA IV and Wii Fit means that we are seeing a huge cross section of customers driven in to the store.”

If the ratio stays the same as first day, and GTA IV continues to sell out as expected, we could be looking at over 550k first week for 360, and 450k first week for PS3! The big question is now, how much over a million did they ship?
