Forums - Sales - How many gamers own multiple consoles?

I've read two conflicting reports now.

NPD says that only 3% own two systems and 2% own all three. http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/npd-72-of-us-plays-games-online-gaming-still-relatively-small/?biz=1

Gamasutra says 40% own multiple consoles. "In the U.S. over 40% of game households now buy two or more of the current console systems."  http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18438

Naturally, I'd trust NPD more, but that number looks really low. Is it really only 3%? Or am I reading something wrong here?  I'd picture that percentage last generation but not this generation with the common case of Wii for family and PS360 for gamers.

Hi there.

The truth is in the middle...

3% sounds far too low, I agree.

That's gibberish. If 3% of Wii owners owned another console, that would mean only 850K owned a Ps3/X360! And it is less than that due to a big number owning Ps3/X360 only, so 600K. That seems VERY low.

I own two and will own three later this year.

i have a Wii60

I own two as well (Wii PS3)

I have 2, Wii60.

Most people have/want a GFX system and a Wii. On this board you will not get a good idea of what is real. A lot of people are loyal to the PS brand and only own the current hardware, same with N consoles.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

If you ask hardcore gamers, i.e. people who go to most video game websites, they will most likely have more than one console. I think that 40% is a bit high and 3% is way too low.

For the record I only have a Wii. That is typical of me, though. I only buy one in the beginning at full price(usually Nintendo's system) and then later on buy the next best console when it gets cheaper(Genesis, PS1, PS2). However, I don't think I will be buying another anytime soon until they drop at least around $250 or so.
