Funny how even this thread turned into a price discussion of the PS3. *Hint* *Hint* Sony.

Actually, it's really not that funny.  It's quite obvious to me... The funny part is how "unobvious" it was when Sony decided to put out a box at $600.

You can use any parallel of any product you want.  Cars for instance:

Honda Accord - Sells by the bazillion.  Quick, Agile, great for the masses (and sells that way)

Chevy Corvette - Sells well, but by no means anywhere near the Accord.

Ferrari - Sells just a few thousand a year, if that, but they are an ultimate car.

It is all about the price of the product as it relates to relative pricing in the mass market.  A Camry, for instance, is priced about the same as an Accord and sells relatively the same number of units.   Lamborghini is comparable to the Ferrari and sells roughly the same.  And so on...

well i see what your saying kind of....but the difference between the cars you listed is very vast in Price you could buy like how many Accords for the price of a Ferrari?

The extra 200 dollars you "save" on buying a 360 is quikly made up when you buy just a few extras....ie. Most of the guys i know that got a 360 picked up the 30-40 dollar intercooler becase it got so hot. Most paid the $100 for the WiFi adapter too along with atleast one Plug and play adapter for $20 and later a few even bought the HD-DVD drive just for movies that alone was $200. Now not figuring in the 200 HD dvd  thats 400 for the 360 say 40 for a cooler 100 WiFi and 20 plug and play cord(400+40+100+20=560)  Thats just for Hardware add the $60/year for the XBL for at least 4 years that would be another $240 dollars added to the price.

Using your analogy you would pay more for a well equiped corvette than for a Standard Farrari (assuming the Wii was the Accord)

Pre ordered/launch

oh yea by the way i own one to from beginning of march. One of the best machines ever. Just need some more games looks like they will be coming soon though. The reasons for the negativity is the Price. It is alot but it can do many things whereas the 360 is alot too and really just plays games out the box. I myself saw the value for the extra 200. For gaming and more

hey whats the best program to transform divx to video 9 to play videos on ps3?

But not videogames .When someone says the X360 CPU is better for "general purpose " they seem to be forgetting we arent talking about a computer here but a videogames machine ,and graphics sound and about everything represented in screen needs mostly single point operations ,so FLOPS (floating point operations per second )is the way to measure them .And the PS3 ,like it or not ,just has some more FLOPS of power that the X360 .Like three times ,to be exact .

Besides ,your 3X more general purpose power of the X360 would assume the 7 SPU of the PS3 have ZERO power applied to general purpose.Thats not the case ,if you have to calculate two times each operation without some help provided by the architechture it evidently reduces the efficiency of the proccesor in half ,but each SPU has as much power as one Core of the X360 (about 25 Gigaflops ) .That lends me to think you simply doesnt know what are you talking about .

First of all: Programmers can only use 5-6 SPEs!

Second:  You know how you can quickly identify people that know nothing about Computers?

When they cite FLOPS. This says as much about a Processing unit as the cycles. Only with very special programs you can get the power of a cell and even they are far below these rates. There is no way to  avoid wait cycles. In fact if the SPEs are only waiting 50% of their time that's quite good! The more parallel systems you have the more wait cycles you will have. Add to it that many programs can't be executed in parallel and you have another dramatic slow down.

Third: The Cell was especially developed for number crunching and pipelines. If a program needs access to a lot of memory while it only computes a little it can't be executed in a SPE! In fact even IBM advices to use the SPEs only for computing intensive functions. And even then the SPE might be the wrong choice, because it can only execute functions without a lot of branching in an effective way. There is no way to get around these restrictions! A multi core doesn't know these restrictions.

Fourth: While normal people didn't realize it but no one uses Assembler anymore for these systems. They are simply to complex to do it on such a deep level because programers need to much time and make to many errors and debugging in Assermbler is a lot of fun and takes even more time. You won't really go lower than C or even C++ and competitors and this means that you depend on compilers and compilers always prefer simpler environments, Less compiler bugs and better optimized code. T0o get a better grip on their programs it is advisable to rely on Libraries or even objects, but these structures make the optimization for the SPEs difficult.

ps3 since launch and lovin it

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

People still use assembly language, but its use is generally not widespread ...An intelligent professor I had in university said that 95% of code would be run 5% of the time and that it was generally less expensive and time consuming to buy faster hardware than to bother optimizing this code. The other side of this is that there is still 5% of your code that needs to be fast in order to give yourself the type of performance you want. Generally speaking you obtain this performance by the use of intelligent data structures and faster algorithms but there are instances where you would still want to use assembly.

Now the problem with the modern focus on parallel processing is that few problems are implicitly parallel, few programmers are properly trained how to handle parallel programming and software has to be properly designed to take advantages of parallel processors. The problem with the Cell is that it doesn't conform to the standard (easy) way for people to conceptualize parallel algorithms (threads/processes) and forces developers to a different paradigm where you attempt to write a single threaded program and break it into multiple parts as needed.

In terms of maximum theoritical performance the PS3 will win because it will be simple to generate a benchmark where the SPEs will be constantly filled with data and processing at full speed. For the average developer it will be far easier to get the three core XBox 360 processor near its maximum potential than the Cell though.

Was it supposed to be 7 spe's with one for the OS and 1 for sound processing? I would imagine new middleware and Sony provided development kits and compilers will help ease the strain of programming for the cell. Though I know from my Java experience that I hate multi-threading hehe

Yes

PS3 since Dec. and love it
