Recently Nintendo announced a huge change in terms of market segments for DS. The fact is consdering different territories target audiences may change a lot. Europe and US are very dufferent than Japan although some primary target can be similar.
I would like to get in-depth info about these DS market segments but is really difficult to get that kind of info from sources close to Nintendo. Any suggestion?

The DS market in Japan is shifting incredibly to both females, and older people due to games like Brain Training being so popular. I cannot give you exact numbers, but I believe the DS is doing well mostly part to these new blue ocean DS gamers.
