I feel I should clarify, this is "the last big leap", not the "biggest leap".

So like, which was the most recent generational transition where it felt like audio improved dramatically.

Gen 7 - PS3/Xbox360 (Not Wii)

This is my pick for "the last big leap". HD-era production, bigger storage capacities, more advanced audio, complex sound mixing, extensive voice acting, and more detailed environmental sounds all became much more achievable.

PS3 especially benefited since it used Blu-ray having larger storage size, even without Blu-ray, it was easily accomplished because of the storage hard drives. Whether it was PS3 or Xbox360, Gen 7 actually had high quality audio in their games that felt immersive and cinematic that I personally felt didn't experience it yet in previous gens, and where getting a good sound system really helped in enjoy your gaming experience even further.

Anything after Gen 7 just feels similar, if anything, it just feels more refined than revolutionary.

Gen 7.

This was the first gen where I felt like games were getting closer to cinema. The audio at some cinematic titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 were a huge improvement over gen 6. Full voice acting, high quality music and sound effects...

Gen 8 and 9 improved the quality, but it's getting really hard to notice it.
