Forums - Nintendo - Box Office Predictions? The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Will Mario Galaxy outperform the OG in lifetime box office?

Yes, The Mario Galaxy Mov... 3 10.71%

Yeah but marginally. 4 14.29%

About the same. If not, slightly more/less 10 35.71%

No, though not by much. 10 35.71%

Nope. No shot. 1 3.57%

Total:28

Based on 370m debut, this is a certain 1.1~1.2 billion movie, unless it really collapse next week which it's close to impossible with A- on cinemascore

First one debuted at 204M, finished at 574M (domestic)
And 171M overseas, finished at 785M (foreign)

Galaxy did 190M domestic
182M overseas, with very much the same launch window with Galaxy having a head start in very small non-key markets which cumulatively must have grossed ~5M or so at best

Legs should be worse than first one (A vs A-), but more than enough to 1 billion+

DOM: 190M opening > 494M final (2.6 multiplier)
OUS: 182M opening > 728M final (4.0 multiplier)
Total: 1.22 billion

Of course for internatinal final numbers we need to wait for Japan. Japan is a curious market where a hyped movie can bomb a relatively unknow movie can be surprise smash hit, so anything can happen there. But even if the movie grossed 0 dollars in Japan it will still be an effortless billion

Around the Network

Saw it today, enjoyed it. I liked it more than the first movie, if you're expecting like a critical darling film, this won't be it, but it felt like a bigger adventure than the first film for sure and there was actually some emotion there that they probably could have milked more if they wanted to. I liked what they did with Rosalina, it fit the story and would fit Mario lore well too. I wouldn't mind if they carried that over into the games. The animation, environments, and action scenes are very nice to watch.

I actually wouldn't mind watching it again in the theater, which wasn't really my feeling on the first film.

There's a ton of musical nods to Nintendo games here, but I wish they had let those themes run a bit longer.

Not that it mattered much but I was kind of surprised that

Spoiler!
Seth Rogan's Donkey Kong was not in the movie, aside from one background cameo. I guess a Donkey Kong movie is supposed to be next?

Looks like Easter Sunday box office actual totals were higher than the estimate.

32.2 mill actual versus an estimate of 30.8 mill or so. That bodes well for Galaxy.
